Censors are only humans - well humans who uses keyword checking systems to identify forbidden Sites.. But actually, pictures like those of the Prog... have no evil words like democracy in it .... so just another Big Picture Dler ...

Censorship of the Internet is pretty much doomed to fail though. There's so many ways to get around censorship, even the Great Firewall of China. It's easy enough to construct a proxy chain to access a Picidae distributor and get forbidden stuff from there.

The bigger problem IMO is foreign (American) companies censoring their own content or other's content in order to do business in China. Google and Yahoo are very complicit in the Chinese government's quest to keep its people under its thumb.

Fortunately, Google.cn sucks at censorship. Go there and search for anything you'd think would be blocked. I guarantee you that, though the results will be slightly sanitized, you'll still find information that the Peoples' Republic wouldn't like its people to have access to. Experiment suggestions: "tiananmen square massacre", "democracy in china". Sometimes you have to go all the way to the second page to find something "objectionable", oh noez censorship!

I think the biggest bane of internet censorship... even if you can get the big fish, the vast majority of internet users don't give a fuck if they post crap that is objectionable to Chinese censors, and even forums like these can turn into buzzing nests of reality check as soon as someone raises the topic. You might be able to block the first party access to an issue, but if it exists the internet will be able to find a way to filter information in. Realistically, the whole world has child porn laws now, yet it's not hard to find online if you really look. Browse 4chan and you've probably run into it accidentally about a million times. It's impossible for China to censor the sheer volume of material they would like to.
