"TekSavvy" Canadian ISP

Post by Caydr »

I just started out with them but it's been hassle free and they're cheap. $30 a month and you get a good price on the modem (you can buy outright or rent to own)

They have an excellent reputation, I checked them out on DSLReports and a couple other sites.

Here's a few speed tests I just did:

Shaw internet in Vancouver.

[edit] I like the fact that they have a good upload rate. It's hard to find an ISP that caters to reasonable uploading. Some are ridiculous, good download rates but upload speeds that 56 modems can compete with.

Nice! How much is it though? Where do you live such that you can get such a good rate to Vancouver? (Waits for "Vancouver")

I don't have anything against Rogers (my current ISP) except that they filter torrent download speeds... horrrribly. I get all my TV through torrents mostly. I can't wait 2 weeks to watch the latest episode of something, you know?

Mars, I wish we had networks over here like you guys get... I hear Sweden in particular has amazing speeds on the cheap.

Our phone companies have received grants from the government to put in fiber optic cable across North America... they spend it on nicer office chairs and stuff.

That just sucks ass. Even the FCC doesn't regard that as "boardband", and their standards are really low.

You should really change your ISP AF, take a look at entanet's resellers such as UKFSN. Entanet is often regarded as one of the best providers.

Yeah, they call it wireless broadband, but it's this speed 99% of the time. It used to go a good bit faster every once in a while, and very rarely in the dead of night suddenly become a 2 megabit connection for half an hour. Apparently it's only broadband when no one else is using it...

I would think it was because of my distance from the tower were it not the fact that it's usually a 3/4 bars connection. I wonder if they've changed something since it never hits peaks anymore. Could I be throttled even when barely downloading anything? Maybe they don't like me staying connected 24/7?

Either way it's off to university with a very good connection in a month. 8)

not to insult you, but you're talking about bits, right?

I am not quite sure.

A bit is 1/8 of a byte, so maybe..

Generally, if I read KB, I see KiloByte, not KiloBit.

So, if it is reading in bits, then maybe I am incorrect, and actually getting the correct speed.

kB == kilobyte
kb == kilobit
There is a difference

In general, I think browsers, bittorent clients, etc. will use bytes, and bandwidth sellers will use bits.
And usually kb is bits and KB or kB is bytes.

Edit: ninja'd >_>
And storage manufacturers use thousands, millions, billions of bytes rather than going by 1024, screwing you out of a good percentage. >_<
