playing without original Total Annihilation

Post by karhu »

Hi,

According to the homepage (http://taspring.clan-sy.com/) and its screenshots, this game is an excellent RTS game. But I read in FAQ that to play it I need the original TA...
Will TA Spring be free?
The core game is released under GPL License. However, some parts of the game are still under copyright by their owners. Therefore, today, you need to own the original TA game if you want to play. However the community is working hard in order to offer completely free alternatives.
now, my problem is that I never played Total Annihilation, and have no idea how to get it now.

Does somebody know how can I get the files needed (from the Internet - via Azureus or Limewire) in order to play TA Spring ?

other question: Is it possible to find free alternatives ?

thanks in advance,

Downlaod the whole spring setup, it contains XTA and all the media needed to runt he game, including questionable files. zwzsg has a patch that morphs it from XTA to OTA, and there's EvOTA too.

To summe it all up:

You can play Spring without TA
To be on the legal side you have to own TA

You can get it from here:

You don't need to have it installed, just own it. So do you own a copy of TA?

(Just say 'yes'.)

thanks for all the replies.

I will download Spring TA and play it soon

btw,
IMHO this information (that it is not needed to have TA in order to play Spring TA) could be posted somewhere visible ( a sticky ? ), so other new users will not hesitate about installing Spring TA in their computers.

Karhu, Spring is treading fine legal tightwalk by having bits of TA stuff technically available for download for free.
Therefore, there is a subtle undercurrent of feeling saying "yes, just download it", but Spring officially cannot show any support of this.

However, there are a number of conversions available for TA which are completely copyright-free, which you can use and share as much as you like.

For example, Star Wars: Total Annihilation material can be downloaded and put with the basic Spring download, free of copyright issues.

I'm pretty much sure that, even that, has copyright issues... It has Star Wars stuff in it.

As a work of fan art that is solely the work of the designers (everything was modelled and textured and created etc, by the designers), it is not really infringing on anything. No money is made from it, and Lucasarts has a history of not caring about Star Wars mods, unlike Blizzard.

It's the value of the franchise that matters to Lucasarts, whereas the games are Blizzard's bread and butter. I think they're being silly about it, but I can see WHY they're being silly about it.

Essentially the units and names are artwork, and that artwork is copyrighted. If you own TA it's like you're just using a mod for the artwork that you arguably have rights to use.

TA:FF uses almost no TA units, SWTA uses none, and TA:WD will soon work on Spring and has no TA content (although it uses sounds from various places).

If you're concerned, it isn't THAT hard to get hold of a legitimate copy of TA.

http://www.bigdaddysoftware.com/toanwicocoba.html I'd suggest this is too expensive.

http://www.bigdaddysoftware.com/toan.html This is closer to the mark.

I have no idea of the reliability of those vendors, they're just links I found. If you can get TA it's worthwhile for the absolute MASS of mods, conversions, units, and maps.

You can get TA here for shipping cost.
As was posted above by Metaltrash.
I don't know if this is worldwide, and I did not order anything myself, I already have all the TA games.
