Dreamcast emulator released

Post by Caydr »

Not a hoax, despite what common sense told me.

Way behind the times, this is months old news but it's still shocking today. To me anyway. I thought I should post about it since it's a relatively "underground" subject and therefore the word doesn't get around as quickly as, say, PS3 sucking.

Someone's got a 100%-speed Dreamcast emulator for PC working. Compatibility's got a long ways to go as you can imagine, but it's still a major feat to get it working at all.

It's called NullDC.

For instance here's Biohazard Code Veronica in action:

Here's the compatibility list:

This is great for me, since my DC's drive motor died.

I used nullDC for a bit and its pretty good, far better than Chankast.

Although:
Dreamcasts are only $AU100 off ebay

Considering how easy it is to pirate games for it its a pretty good buy, although the controller is kinda a peice of shit.

I bought one and I only play Street Fighter 3rd Strike and CvS2 and MvC2 and it was worth it 8)

My dreamcast still works, and its the model that runs burned discs, so i don't need an emulator :D

The emulators themselves are not copyright infringement. Its the ROMs, ISOs, and firmware that are copyright infringement, which Caydr made no reference to.

Is there any reason at all for a dreamcast? Was there even one good unique game on it which wasn't released to several other consoles/platforms before?

That on the gamecube, I think. I believe most of the good dreamcast games were ported onto the gamecube and PS2.

Idunno which of these are ported to the GC, but I know that these are the ones that still get play on my DC:

Virtual On: Oratio Tangram (damnit, I want a Wii version of this).
Powerstone 2 (a must for Super Smash fans)
Puzzle Bobble 4
OutTrigger (good, solid, fast-paced FPS deathmatch)
Canon Spike (Smash TV remake with Capcom characters)
Chu Chu Rocket

"Before"? Dunno about that. For whatever its failings are (I'm no expert on the DC, I just know it's a lot prettier than anything before it, and it was very good for its time), it's a very powerful console compared with what came before, Playstation and N64. I ignorantly doubt that very many N64/PS games got posted to DC.

"After"? Well a lot of DC games have been ported to other platforms iirc, for instance Crazy Taxi. But show me a decent PS2/GC/Xbox emulator please.

Regardless, let's get to the important thing: NullDC is the only way to play Soul Caliber on a PC. I win, admit it biatch.

Well I've never played anything besides Chu Chu Rocket on the DC, maybe that's where I got the impression from. :P

#1 reason to emulate DC? 0 load times... worst problem with the DC in my opinion was like 2 minutes load times between scenes... which for a game like Sonic Shuffle meant 2 minutes load time every 3 minutes of play time...

There are a number of games that were awesome on DC that ended up getting ported to GC or other, but some had bits left out (for example any VMU interaction... which I doubt is ported in the emulator... yet)

I use my DC for playing arcade ports, but if you're emulating you are probably better off emulating an arcade machine instead.
