About maps & map files

Post by Pendrokar »

Why should we have maps that are duplicated(same region added to one side) or just some settings changed(like wind speed, Tidal strength and water height)?
It would save space on the hard drive if:

Take Speedmetal and Nometal Speedmetal maps for example! Both maps are equal in heightmap, textures and size, but are served as two different maps just because Nometal Speedmetal has two setting changed (No Wind, No Metal)! Well I'm not quite sure if .sd7 or .sdz file types can be made to do this, but they could be just shortcuts to the map that they use, just with different settings attached to em! Same goes for Delta Siege with Delta Siege Dry maps which has only water level decreased!
----
With duplicated maps It's something else and more complex to make as shortcuts with added settings! The most popular example are the delta siege maps! Like Delta Siege Duo, Delta Siege Rev and Delta Siege Duo Rev! I know that spring can't just add map to one side of the map! But that would rly help loosen some free space! So by this I mean that .sd7 or .sdz files could be shortcuts to the originally used map with added region to a side even reversed!

That would be to hard to make! But I know that there are people people like challenges!

I know what you're saying, but it's not economically doable in terms of system usage...

Let me sum up your reason for you in 3 letters or less:

Otherwise known as the Spring map tile format!

I believe this is theoretically possible with sm3, but sm3 support has been abandoned for now.
