line of sight mask & performance increase

Post by BrainDamage »

hi, i'd like to see other people experience on this thing

i do own a quite old pc (no, changing is not possible unless you give me the money) a P4 1.8 GHz with a geforce 2 440 mx as grafic card

i'm running spring on linux

after some tweaking in both OS & the game i reached the point i do get approx 40 fps when the game starts

recently i discovered that when i enable the line of sight & radar mark (the "L" key) i do double my fps! from 40 fps to 80!

did anyone else notice this behaviour? can one of the devs explain why this happends?

also i do have the impression that the landscape detail looks lower when you enable that mode, is that correct?

screenshots (the yellow digit in the low-right corner is the current fps):

Looks like the detailed texture slows down, not the LOS...

i thought it was obvious; those screnshots are from the same game, therefore same settings

the only difference is that in the first i had the LOS OFF and the second it was ON

how can it be such performance increase? if you notice, the loss of detail is minimum, while the performace boost is huge

also, why does LOS mode reduces landscape detail?

i tested it for me, LoS does not alter performance nor texture quality... (its the texture that gets more coarse, not the landscape detail from what i can see).

What i'm missing: you don't get the green tint??

(everything is tinted green when its in radar range...

it seems a very small glitch, until i send an order to the comm, the green mask isn't applied; after sending doing so, it will work every time i toggle it (as you can see the performance boost is unrelated from it)

yes, you're correct about details & texture, sorry, i had to be more specific and talk about map texture details

(notice that the comm has moved a bit)

This still is weird...

on your minimap, the los still isn't green from what i can see.

and - on my system the LOS is applied without moving the commander

did you compile spring yourself or do you use a package?

(my system is AMD64 , 64bit linux, 64bit spring, Geforce 6100) - i compiled spring myself...

ok i think i solved the mistery

i do have in my springrc file:
HighResLos=0
setting it to 1 makes that i don't get tex detail drop in LOS mode but i don't get performance boost neither

and the LOS not updating until moving, seems be present only in CA, i tested using XTA & BA & other non-TA mods & doesn't appear there

regarding not showing in the minimap, it seems correct to me, the minimap marks gree the areas covered by radar only, not LOS, i tested building a radar & green areas appeared (but that bould be another different setting too :P)

(btw compiled from sources, CPU is i686 P4, OS is i586, spring i586, GPU: geforce 2)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

people with low-end computers might want to have that option off and play in LOS mode as in gives you quite big performace improvement for a really small tex detail loss
