Good idea, certainly useful for light swords or melee weapons.

Here's a very simple LuaUI toy script that makes all units within LOS leave team-colored trails (SVN builds only). There are some limitations with regards to how the effect is achieved (it doesn't actually sample unit vertex data, for instance), but improving it is left as an exercise to the user. ;) To see what it looks like, drop the script in LuaUI/Widgets, start Spring, and type:

Perhaps but their movement is predictable so you can just model them motion-blurred right away.
