Halo blows

Post by Caydr »

Halo got two things right: Controls and multiplayer.

It got WRONG:
Level design (run through corridoor A 16 times in a loop, fight horde of screaming babies, repeat)
Art direction (for everything but the MC suit)
Friendly AI

It was OK:
Story, which actually had a couple surprises (most were so over-foreshadowed nobody could've been surprised)
Music, it has one memorable track, and you all know the one I mean since there was only one that was memorable.
Enemy AI
Weapons (two are worth using, only time you'll use the others is if you're bored... and who wouldn't be. Conveniently you can carry only two weapons...)

Worst aspects:
Enemies were cartoons. More cartoony than a freaking goomba. What the heck were the designers thinking when they came up with "grunts"? If there was ever a chance of any immersion, I think hearing in plain english aliens with a chipmunk voice screaming "RUN AWAYYY!!!" would probably ruin it.
Repetitive levels, so bad I actually laughed out loud about it the first time I played. It's so bad to the point where if you asked a first time player "what do you think will be past this door?", he'd probably get it right.

Even worse is the fact that if you removed the pointless backtracking and fighting through the same level again and again, the game would probably last less than 5 hours even to a newbie. Halo's level design has to be the greatest example of developer laziness I've ever seen. I can't imagine what they were thinking.

Halo is so overrated it stabs me at my heart to think that people actually compare this game to the likes of Half Life, Deus Ex, or any other high quality PC shooter. The elimination of grunts from the game, that alone would raise Halo's credibility as a real shooter so much. All grunts should be replaced with elites, and all existing elites should be those hugeass no-head things.

Any game with grunts. I can ignore nonexistent level design, but grunts are too obnoxiously stupid for me to overlook.

I LIKED HALO 1 :- ((

ESPECIALLY THE MULTIPLAYER WAS AWESOME, SETTING UP A XBOX-CONNECT GAME WITH FRIENDS AND PLAYING SOME 8X8 BLOODGULCH MATCHES IS ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE THINGS IN FPS GAMES I'VE EVER PLAYED. *PROTIP* JUMPING VS A SNIPER IS A NO-NO

Don't forget...

Inefficiently coded, inefficiently mapped.

Halo is fucking brilliant for anyone where the Xbox was their first foray into FPS games.

We've been playing 32 player team deathmatches on the PC for years.

It's useless to argue against some of these folks because they are 12 year old kids who are so wrapped up.

AGREE AGREE.

REGARDING THE INEFFICIENTLY MAPPED; YOUR RIGHT THERE WERE A LOT OF GLITCHES BUT THAT WAS THE FUNNY PART OF IT.

ONE MATCH WE PLAYED VS ANOTHER TOP-CLAN ON THOSE DAYS WAS THE FIRST ONE TO DISCOVER A GLITCH YOU COULD USE TO THROW YOURSELF "OUTSIDE" THE MAP. WAS FUN TO SEARCH FOR THE GUY WITH THE SKULL FOR 15 MINS ONLY TO SEE HE'S WALKING IN THE EDGES OF THE CLIFFS, GOT HIM SNIPED BUT THE SKULL NEVER CAME DOWN XD

Yeah, so did I. Once. Second time through, not so much. Online, not so much.

Halo was okay...but System Shock 2 is the thinking man's FPS. And by that I mean it's actaully an RPG.

Halo was awesome, I liked the little grunts especially the stuff they would blurt out about you being a green devil as you were attacking them, halo also had possibly the most satisfying assault rifle in any fps, awesome sounds and music the way the shield worked was great, vehicle combat was sweet, grenades that you didnt have to "select" before throwing, massive explosions and the end level was fecking brilliant.
Me and my bro had so much fun playing co op too.

Tbh the only thing I disliked was some of the repetetive levels, but they were no where near as bad as it's made out, there were some cracking levels in there too remember, like the swamps after the flood are introduced and some of the rolling outdoor levels, plus a whole new race pops up midgame to keep things intresting.

For me it's up there with all the best fps around, I enjoyed it way more than HL2.
It's just cool to hate it because it was developed for console instead of pc :P

I edited this 5 times for spelling ^^

Halo is awesome as a multipalyer game. In my hall we had 16 people across 4 networked xboxes in 4 adjacent rooms on our own little lan. Fucking blast. It's really awesome to get a nice headshot and then here "FUCK YOU!" from your homeboy in the next room.

I just got Tribes 2 a little while ago and it's pretty fun, how is it compared to Halo? I've only played Halo with some friends at some place every now and then.

Tribes 2 is everything (imo) halo should have been. If they made tribes 3 with 50% the budget put into Halo it would probably be the best multiplayer fps in teh world (imo :P).

The level of class customisation, and the necessity for teamwork in Tribes gave it elements that games like BF2142 still lack.

And skiing was awesome fun.

Oh and Halo 2 had a wicked soundtrack, particularly the 2 long incubus instrumentals (Odyssey parts 1 & 2).
