Did anyone try the new UFO title? UFO Extra terrestrials?
Tried it about 1h sunday evening and I've got to say it seems quite ok so far gameplay wise! Graphicswise it looks REALLY outdated but I think it might be a fun game once you get into it.

The original is only five dollers on Steam. Cheaper, and probebly better :D

I liked TFTD more than UFO Defense (graphically). A fan patched XCOM1 and 2 are on par IMO. Apocalypse was something entirely different and lots of fun at the same time.

I've played the first of the remakes and it became repetitive and boring after some time. It just didn't feel like XCOM anymore, there was too much realism in it. The other two games are probably the same gameplay wise.

Apparently this one is considered a bit of a stinker. A better one is supposed to be UFO: Afterlight. They were released within months of each other and, while both ripping off the same gameplay, have nothing to do with each other.

Not directed at anyone in particular, this is just thinking out loud:

You know what's weird, is that if there was a perfect carbon copy of every aspect of TFTD or even the original, but just with better graphics and no dreaded WinXP-induced bugs (what's the deal with the Steam version still crashing? Shoulda been fixed, I tells ya), people would still say the original was better. Even if you had the original selling at $9.99 and the new one selling at $8.99. I wonder why that is? Seriously...

Yeah I'm probably wrong.

It's just occurring to me, when was the last time you (or the majority, or even a minority) wasn't disappointed with a sequel, even if it was in every significant way, superior to the predecessor?

I notice this in myself too. Games I haven't been disappointed with make up a pretty short list. Metroid Prime 2 gave me more Metroid Prime, but generally harder, which I have no problem with. So I was happy with it. It fixed up a couple boring/tedious parts of the original, and had a lot of cool "dark world stuff"... So there's one. Then, Half-Life 2. Mmm... I thought SupCom was impressive but lacking in gameplay up until the new patch, which still leaves a lot I'd like to tweak, but it's up to the state I expected now, very solid. New Super Mario Bros rules everything, except for those two damn ghost levels where I can't get the last star... Jedi Knight, Jedi Outcast were both spectacular sequels, even if the latter had pants multiplayer. Galactic Civilizations 2 made Galciv 1 look amateur and crappy, and Dark Avatar was even better...

...But by and large, the everything goes "Great success!" to "Mediocre at best" to "Dismal failure" to "Buy this, it has shiny film packaging materials!"

Examples... Deus Ex, whose sequel had the makings of genius but a garbage engine that could probably make my modern brand-new computer stutter, and crappy everything but story. Story is nice, gameplay is better. Knights of the Old Republic was the first RPG I've ever played, heh heh... no really, it was. I've gotten into a few others since then, but it's hard to find something that comes close. KOTOR2 was crapola...

What are some examples of games that actually got better in sequels? Can anyone come up with some? I can think of only ONE, and that was Descent. Descent 2 had everything that made Descent great, but bigger and better. Larger levels, more robots, awesome bosses, great new weapons, and above everything else - multiplayer. Descent 2 multiplayer is the most intensely exhilarating gameplay I've ever experienced. An 8-player FFA in a cramped level with only a few seconds between each plasma-dodging gunfight in 3 dimensions while avoiding stray fire from the other fights and running for your life as someone comes in with the entire mine's allotment of smart missiles and the only vulcan cannon, obliterating everything that can't get out of the line of fire. And then some bastard blows up the level's reactor, triggering a self destruct. You have 30 seconds to reach the exit while 6 other people do the same, only to realize that that jerk who blew the reactor covered the entire vicinity with smart mines. Does anyone make it out alive? Man... I've got to find some people who have it so we can have a fight like that again.

Yes... some people get nausea though since 3D movement is so alien to what they're used to. But it's like, imagine playing a first person shooter where you can't jump. Now imagine you can jump, strafe in three directions simultaneously, fire four types of weapons (primary secondary bomb flare... yes flare. When you're desperate) simulatenously, use afterburners, and there are 20 (19 really, I suppose) different weapons. Weapons that aren't just carbon copies with slight differences, but things that are actually unique among FPS games. Bouncing weapons, a gun that drains your opponent's health while recharging your own, homing-on-impact weapons, two varieties of instant-hit, weapons with massive area-of-effect that can clear out an entire room with one shot, dropped mines...

Primaries:
Laser/Super laser - real carbon copy. This is why I say 19 weapons, not 20
Vulcan - instant-hit, high damage, constant firing, limited special ammo
Gauss - near-instant-hit, medium-high damage, rapid-firing, powerful impact that knocks your opponent's aim off, limited special ammo (shared with vulcan)
Spreadfire - Fires in three directions at once, alternating an a "-" and "|" pattern
Helix - Fires in 7 directions at once, rotating slowly, clears out a room if you have the right angle
Plasma - The ultimate all-rounder, high damage, medium fire rate
Phoenix - Plasma but with high energy use rate, bounces off walls, even more powerful
Fusion - Charge shot which can kill an enemy with a single hit and travels through multiple enemies
Omega - Drains enemy shields, adds it to your own, homing, short range (excellent for finishing off a damaged opponent, otherwise not high enough damage per second)

Missiles:
Concussion - Run of the mill, not very useful, but adds a bit of kick to your attacks
Flash - Clears out your opponent's screen so they can't see or hear a bloody thing, similar to flashbang of Counterstrike
Homing - Homing, slightly less powerful concussion missile
Guided - Has 30 seconds of fuel, you can steer it, press fire again to put it into auto-homing mode where it has better homing ability than regular homing missiles
Smart - Has no homing ability but when it hits a wall or object, rapidly accelerating homing plasma balls shoot out, among the deadliest weapons because of versatility
Mercury - Near instant-hit, high damage, powerful kick on impact to throw off aim
Mega - Blows up anything in a large radius
Earthshaker - combination of mega missile's explosive power with Smart missile's homing-on-hit ability, empties an entire room of anything that is or ever was alive

Bombs:
Proximity - Not really good for a whole lot IMO, too easy to avoid. Can be useful to slow down pursuit if you're being chased, good to drop as you're rounding a corner since they can be shot and destroyed immediately after they exit your ship
Smart - Like a stationary smart missile, deadly as hell. Drop em in front of doors and in energy centers, has NO damage on initial explosion, so you can drop them and let your opponent shoot them as he's chasing you. Deadly deadly deadly.

Flares:
Flare - It's a frickin' flare. Does 1 damage per hit. Supposed to be used for lighting up dark rooms, more often used for humiliating a newbie.

Pickups:
Energy>Shield converter - Not very common in multiplayer games, allows you to convert energy to health at a 2:1 ratio.
Headlight - Since the levels are often rather dark, but can give away your position very easily.
Afterburner - Doubles your speed for a limited maximum amount of time, uses energy to charge.

Oh. And one little thing called "cooperative multiplayer" which rocks your pants off.

Once you watch a lagging xbox load the levels of texture on the Master Chief one by one in Halo 2, you'll know why the series isn't all it is cracked up to be.

Halo blows. I'm so irritated by your usage of the word "halo" in the same post as "descent" that I'm making a thread about it now...

ye3a youre right

im gonna make an RTS where you have to play it with your ass cheeks, and it'll be the only good exclusive title for a next-gen console. then after everyone plays it because of that reason and all the other RTS fans tell me how its retarded to play an RTS with your ass cheeks, i'll tell them that RTSing with your hands is far too easy. Next!
