After numerous failures with l3dt, i've decided to try bryce. Can someone help me get started by giving me some tips?

I use Bryce 5.5 for my Spring mapping needs. Should be close enough to 6. What can I do for you?

Does bryce offer something that I can use to make a texture map?

you can render a large image from a pure top down perspective but I am unfamiliar with bryce's orthographic setting.

Yah, basicly what he said.
Press the create button, change to the birds eye view (from above) and align the terrain to the center. Double Click the terrain to edit the heightmap.
Once you got the heightmap you want, press the checkmark to get out of there. Click the arrow next to the "Edit" text up top to apply a terrain. Find one you like, theres lots to choose from, and apply. Change the size of the terrain or find the right zoom to make it fit to your entire screen. Press the render button (you wanna preview render if your just gonna see what it looks like) and let it go.
Once you decide you wanna export the texture, use the render to disk feature in the File menu.

There are a few more things you have to know to get the best looking texture you can, but ask away if you have any problems.
