Spring Quickstart Guide

Post by KingRaptor »

A lot of newbies seem to have trouble figuring out Spring, so I decided to throw together a simple quickstart guide to help people get into the game.

Spring Quickstart Guide, first revision

It's strictly a work in progress. I need criticism on things that can be improved. Does it hold the user's hand too much? Does it fail to cover important aspects? Too many pretty pictures? Not enough pretty pictures? Should I give more airtime to non-TA mods? Would it be better if I just scrapped it altogether? etc. etc.

So, how about it?

Would be nice if you could explain shortly how to play with just few sentences per thing...
Looks okay to me, but too much text for noobs, noobs just want to play. Well ive never found such guides usefull, ive learnt playing by trying the game and pressing buttons...

remove this man : "You may be tempted to download SpeedMetal and Green_Fields as well, but I'd stay off them if I were you." (chapter 3)

SpeedMetal is like your guide : a good practice so let the noobs play it !!!
Greeen field is another style of map and we are lot of star players to like it !!!

explain where put all when u have finish to download (maps floder, mods folder ...)

Remove the marker explaination cause it block all the azerty keyboard ... in azerty you have to change the key or when u draw anything u cant play after ... or maybe u can explain where is the text file where we can change the key ???

That's all i think but your guide is fine :D

I have an azerty keyboard. I have no idea what you talk about with this supposed "marker key blocking the keyboard". Markers works the same, just the default key is some key between the ├é┬¿^├é┬ñ├é┬ú$*├é┬Á├â┬╣% keys which makes is hard to remember. But it doesn't block or prevent doing anything after.

I have Finnish keyboard and my marker key is at the left from number 1 key. Which is "§/›" key.

SpeedMetal is more like crack: easy to use, highly addictive, and ultimately destructive.

i agree with felix and drolito...

merely by mentioning those maps you'll get people curious enought to dl them... so why not push their first encouter with them back to aleast their inital lobby use...

also i would put the online part before the gameplay part first seeing as you can/could host a game from the lobby and test that way...

which reminds me.. Please put a dislcaimer somewhere early on that talks about how Spring is MP oriented and that SP is still in developmental stages with only basic skirmishing available... People need to know what they are getting into before they go thru this whole guide.
