How to get XTA/BA players to play non-TA mods
Moderator: Moderators
C'on. people know it is called "spring". That name has been picked in a thread around dec 2004/jan 2005. (sadly it has been lost with a server crash). And people should know that Spring is an engine and the tag "mod" is actually wrong, but has been accepted since it's a habbit. (Like saying a compass points north)
Indeed. the banner needs to be changed. A lot of the site and wiki needs to be changed. Actually, hasen't this been the <I don't even know how many times it has been, but only one would be sufficient> time that this point has been adressed.

The name 'spring' was not chosen in a thread on this forum and indeed it predates this forum.
SJ chose the name spring years before, 2002? Back when spring was in the stage currently known as 'old old old bagge' (see the downlaod page), which was back when spring was a 19th century warfare game, and later became a demonstration fo what TA might look like in 3D that wasnt playable.
Spring was meant as in "to spring forward", to leap, jump, little wire thing coiled up, not "spring is here, daffodils and sunshine are coming!", but the original forum goers didnt like this and decided a name change was needed without consulting the SYs who were in charge at the time. The forum people debated at length and troleld and flamed and the SYs decided to ignore the thread.
When the people in the thread finally realised that the SYs werent looking at the thread anymore they all quickly started concluding that we should keep the name 'spring' for the names sake so that they didnt look silly. Then they all left the thread and camped in the spring logo thread.
This was in early 2005 a few months before the 'suspiscious' forum hacking where all posts save the admin posts mysteriously vanished, and yet the admin forum and the admin postcounts remained intact where the users hadnt. There're about 2000 backedup posts in threads at the start of the forum that fnordia restored to the user forums that arent included in our postcounts or searches but can be seen fi you look back far enough. Its why most longterm suers ahve ridiculously low posts per day stats.
Indeed if fnordia recieved a website script eh could just copy paste over the existing site he would do so, but nobody has been given the necessary information and he doesnt seem to be too bothered about it either. Whenever I've asked he's given nothing but accepts fully finished sites.
Indeed I have attempted a fully functional site:
http://taspring-linux.berlios.de
That site is fully functional, and includes a wiki, download management system, and a full content and user management system. The only tasks left would be to integrate this phpbb forum and move our existing wiki over/redocument. It was originally intended as the portal site that people would goto to get spring and that this site would become the community site, but the tobi and jelmer decided not to use it.
Since then I've offered the site up to other uses but nobody has taken up the offer and the site appears to be unused. Indeed there is much more that can eb done with that site, as it uses the same base system as http://www.darkstars.co.uk and there are masses of extensions available, such as the commenting and gallery 2 integration I use at darkstars, aswell as subsites.
It would be my suggestion to appoint a set of maintainers whose responsibility is to make sure that the sites are kept intact and running with new content. I dont mind making sure the site ticks over, and teaching content managers how to use the system, aswell as doing things like integrating tracker systems etc, but I'm not entirely good with keeping all the content upto scratch. Setting up the site to then have the community site as a subsite would be easy.

Maybe it would be helpful if there was a 'Games' tab at the top (maybe after News) of the menu. This would link to a page that had an index of all the games available for Spring: maybe a logo for each, a few thumbnails of screenshots, and a short description/download link. (I doubt many newbies make it all the way to the wiki 'mods' page)

There was a point to that post if you look hard enough.LathanStanley wrote:what the fuck are you talking about?Felix the Cat wrote:But is it an open source RTS? Or an open source RTS engine?
Are mods modifications or games?
Is the sky cerulean or azure?
We're right back... well, a bit past square one, not square two either... just a tiny bit past square three... ah, here we are. Square ├â┬Å├óÔÇÜ┬¼.
Hint #1. "Cerulean" and "azure" are slightly different shades of light blue.
Hint #2. Parallel sentence structure often indicates that the author intends to draw a parallel between the sentences with parallel structure. Hence, if I were to theoretically say the following:
"Is AF pimping that website he made again?
Is water wet?"
...then I would be inferring that asking if AF is pimping his website again would be like asking if water is wet. Understand that this is simply a theoretical case and any similarity to any actual persons, places, events, or statements is purely incidental.

ok ok, I understand you are pulling a parallel, but you answered it with square n... what the hell... it, and you, still don't make sense...Felix the Cat wrote:There was a point to that post if you look hard enough.LathanStanley wrote:what the fuck are you talking about?Felix the Cat wrote:But is it an open source RTS? I am an architect and engineer, I study logical steps and mathematics... not literary jargon. If you wanna be a shrink and talk like one, make it make some sense, or make me realise it makes sense.... you made it more confusing now that I'm trying to figure out the parallel I'm supposed to get from that...
My logical mind says "Felix makes no sense, knows not where he is, and compares spring to it... thus, spring is not known where its at, and is not TA nor Game?"
huh?
how about you just say; "Spring used to be TA, but now it's no longer just TA on crack, but rather on it way to its own game, needing more origional material to be so.."
sigh... why do people have to make things COMPLICATED!!!

It is not the answer that you seek, but the question.LathanStanley wrote:ok ok, I understand you are pulling a parallel, but you answered it
(In layman's terms, simply because I'll be leaving the computer in a little bit: The "answer", as you understood it, was not in fact answering the question. It assumed that the reader understood the inference that discussing whether Spring is a game or an engine, or XTA/BA/etc are mods or games, is simply an argument over semantics and therefore moot... much like discussing whether the sky is cerulean or azure.)

I take offense at felix's blatant disrespect at my insightful look into the past of this forums history, and the effort I put in and the events that followed it, and my recount of those events in hopes of shedding light on an otherwise unknown facet of this community and its workings. I dont appreciate trolling, and people behaving like felix are sapping this community of whatever progress its trying to make.
Everybody wants a website
Tobi vetoes cms'
Jelmer doesnt want to maintain it
Yeha is never involved
Trepan is nowhere to be seen when these discussions occur
Fnordia is the same
SJ is off with his job at paramount doing stuff
And everybody else is grabbing at thin air for features to add to the requirements list
Nobody knows about compromise. You want a flexible and easy system but you want it coded from scratch, and keep suggesting complex, horrible methods of building a site. You suggest all sorts fo thigns for it, you complain how static html is awkward to keep going and maintain, yet these people then complain they dont want a dynamic custom menu system.
And its getting the same with this non-TA mods business.
You want a site, fine. You get a site, you complain no matter what, and you stick to your current site then complain the current site wont work how it should.
The only fully fledged mod I can see which is anywhere near finsihed in terms of the archive that plugs into spring is kernel panic.
EE is constantly being re-engineered, Gundam is long long way off, Starwars is in a neverending dev cycle again, nanoblobz has questionable balance and an entire second race to model, and the rest are in alpha stages.
Out of this only smoth has a website, only smoth has half decent guides, and only smoth has any real idea about whats necessary, and smoth isnt bothered about doing it untill he's extended gundam further. The only way anybody can moan is if you're called smoth, you've changed your mind, and fully executed all the plans, fully advertised the gundam website, gone around masses of communities, and gotten no more players.
Even then I have not been approached about single player clients or skins for any mod, just trepan and ingame lua UIs (namely smoth and argh), nor has any other dev I speak with, no mention from anyone of custom installers save from me and tobi in this thread.
So I think its time everyone shut up about this business or get off their ass and do something rather than endlessly discussing things. You have a replacement website that you could implement half these ideas on in minutes. You have a single player client all ready with theme support. The NSIS installers arent hard to fiddle, just replace XTA.sd7 with your mod archive in the scripts and rebuild with a click of a button.

lol?
Prototypical AF overreaction.
I observe that you're pimping that website that the devs are clearly not interested in using, yet again. This is a fairly common occurence, though not so much lately, which is nice.
The only request I've ever made with regard to the Spring website is that there be an unmoderated forum section. That's it. I think the rest works quite fine.

I never vetoed CMS I just dont like it, it's extremely server hungry, it takes ages to get anything done in it because its all stupid click here.. wait ages for reload, click there, wait ages for reload, etc., instead of just being able to get stuff done, and it all looks like "hey, thats yet another website with the blabla CMS".
If someone takes initiative and makes and maintains a website in CMS then sure, I cant stop it its open source after all, but as of now it's always been me who had to "just fill in the website with like 100 content pages" which "can be done in minutes"... right.....
Most the stuff that you suggest can be done in minutes takes hours in practice, especially if you aint used to it (actually I asked in #main today about this installer idea and smoth replied that it would be too much hassle).

So what are we changing the banner to then? Something like:
'TA Spring is a new RTS. If runs conent from teh game Total Annihalation even better than the original. Other people have tried to make some other types of games out of it which are rumoured to be quite good but nobody actually knows for sure'
