Alot of mods have roots in (semi)popular OTA mods anyway, the exception being EE which has built itself a following quite successfully from nothing.

I honestly want to know where I have tried to force my mod down peoples throats..

Ususally when I mention it anywhere (or someone else does) said person gets jumped on by a bunch of people hating on EE for it to go anywhere...

I dont think I have made a bajillion posts across the forum saying PLAYZ EE.. I also dont think I have made reference to it in many if any of my non specifically related EE threads (1). Frankly all I want is some props for having made the damn thing from scratch, and that with regards to those props you dont insult it out of hand simply because you dont like it..

I dont know where this perception of people trying to force other mods on people has come from.. because I havent really seen all that much of it.. this thread seems more like repressed guilt...

At what point do you people not understand that I do not care that gundam is not popular, I am not making it for everyone. Seriously boirunner, I have done counter-promotion because I am never happy with gundam.. I am a perfectionist and it is not perfect by any means. A large part of me is happy few people play gundam. However, there are some people playing it from time to time in lobby. I do not mind being relatively unknown, it is better then having fans and having to answer to them. Fans can be exhaushting.

Boirunner wrote:gundam or star wars ta are perfect examples for how this could work. i'm sure there must be thousands of RTS playing gundam fans out there. get in contact with THEM to make gundam a bigger game, don't try to get TA guys to change. There must be thousands of RTS playing star wars fans our there who have never heard of swta - the same applies here.
Lol, nah, anime fans are not huge into rts games. There are tons of Starwars fans, I am sure starwars will be VERY popular. However, people who are after a gundam RTS game? Not so many, mainly because they would rather pilot the mech etc. Different type of fanbase. However, I am a rts gamer and a gundam fan, gundam will exist, if only for me. However, I know there are people who do enjoy it. So I am happy that someone else finds enjoyment in my work.

I think most modders naturally make the mod they want to play themselves, rather then what other people want. And what Fang said.
Zpock, I do appreciate that others understand what I am thinking.

manored wrote:I also find it anyoing how some people aparear to hate people who prefer to stick to the maps/mods they like.
We only hate people who stick to BA+SpeedMetal and refuse to even acknowledge the existence of other mods. It just drive us mad because then the same people are making complaints or suggestion about things already adressed for long in other mod, because they keep making the implied assumption that nothing but BA exists, which is downright insulting.

Also, modders don't have enough money to get A4 adds printed in magasine, to get a parternership with Gamespy, to run adds on television, to invite journalist from oversea to play their mod, to buy banner on every major gaming site, etc... So they obviously can't get the same coverage and advertisting campaign that commerical game. And now you want to forbid then to, not even advertise, but merely mention their existence of their work, in forums?
Boirunner wrote:I haven't played any non-ta mod to decide if they actually suck.

So they might be really good, but nobody knows about them.
And after that, you say we shouldn't try to get them known?

I am still convinced non TA mods are not played simply because of ignorance, fear of unknown, lazyness, lack of open battleroom, lack of critical mass, and so that the advertising of other mods should be intensified*, not declared illegal.

The problem is that right now I see much more people flaming mods they dont like than I see people encouraging mods they like.

True there is people who just dont wanna try new mods/maps, but its because they dont think its worth a try... then you need to make it be somehow.

AAaaaaggghhhhh....

Some people act like such children and they know who they are. IF you don't wanna practically try another game for free then you're a dumbass anyway.

No, the problem is that some people see encouring mods some people like as a flame toward mods people like. Err... The problem is that whenever someone defends a mod likes, he's attacked.

Not everyone who plays spring came for the TA...

Everyone who play spring has to go at some point to the main website, and, if they came to the main website for the Spring engine instead of TA, it would make sense to advertise a non-TA mod there.

Though it might be even better to try to attract players to Spring through something other than TA, such as Gundam, or Star Wars, or by going to 1337 RTS gamer websites and talking about how much skill it takes to play EE.

"I bet any of you would be crushed at EE, and, by the way, here are some pictures of how cool it looks. So go and try it, unless you're too afraid to lose." :P

+1 for boirunner.
I think if on the mods website they also had their own version of the installer/lobby only included their mod and the maps they like and have the lobby join #mymodmain and not even join #main.
TA culture and other mods don't need to be overlapping.
Sure some TA players will want to play other mods, but you can't convince most to try something different. The few should instead find the other mods for themselves.

Alright, lemme get something clear.

I prefer single player to multi player, even knowing this, I came to spring cuz I played TA and liked it. I wanted better graphics of course, but that wasn't the only thing. I wanted more mods, cuz I knew that Spring had more mods. To me, they are like slightly half-assed free games. And there is NOT a problem to me with that. If I was lookin that far down on them, why would I create my own? EE was funner to me than all of these AA, BA, XTA and etcetera variants. Why? graphics maybe? Gameplay maybe? I dunno, I liked it more though. TBH, I don't like any of the games enough to be hooked on them, and I want to be a game dev when I grow up. Thus the reasons for me making my own mod/game/game pack/TC, whatever the fuck ya wanna call it. I prefer video game.

Now then, why won't other people stop going.. "Hey! You said E&E was fun, fuck you and fuck E&E! BA 4ever!"

I don't know. If I find a reason to buy a game or play a game, I will! Chris tells me to get a game, I check some reviews to see if he was right about it, or I go and play it at his house, then I buy it!

Now then, stop with the motherfucking elitism and try some other fucking games.

I know my mod's game that it's based off of has practically no user base right now. The company is already dead and gone, unfortunately. There are no forums, guides, faqs, ect. So I need to try and attract spring players.

BTW, Spring players... Get RL friends to play, come on, they will try it and I know from experience most people like it. My friend Chris got Zack, Devin and a few other kids into Spring, so why not try and recruit some RL people, not randoms over the web.

dude, you made this thread made out of complete complain.

and it's not just you. zwzsg's post in this thread is... well.... silly, to put it lightly.
zwzsg wrote:Do not, I repeat do not, under any circumstances, no matter how heavy the pressure, ever play AA, BA, XTA, NOTA or BOTA. They are bad mods, made out of ten years old material. The all use all the same unit models stolen from a commercial game, with stat randomly changed. There are made of fail.
and that in a thread where the guy SPECIFICALLY CAME FOR THE TA! but yeah, it's mostly you, smoth.

---

anyway, i made my point. some people understood what i'm saying, and some people didn't. for instance, of course i don't want to forbid people from talking about their mods. neither do i dislike non-ta mods.

and to all the people calling me arrogant and close minded because i don't play all the mods are hypocrites. if you were so open minded about all mods, i'd see you hosting gundam and ee and swta all the time. but i don't, do i?

actually, i just tried out gundam because of this thread. i didn't even take that long to get a game going. It looks kinda fun, would take some getting used to, and would certainly takes hours and hours of playing to appreciate the heroes and advanced gameplay aspects.

but like most people, i have limited time to play computer games, and yes, i'll stick to the one i came for, thanks.

anyway, all i wanted so say has been said. to super-condence the point i wish to make:

I came for the legend of TA, never having played TA.

I play every mod here, and I enjoy the non-TA ones exponentially more. Spring as an engine, all games included, has reignited my interest in commercial RTS as well. Right now I'm juggling AOE II, Homeworld, Homeworld 2, Warcraft III and Warcraft II.

Smoth is a game developer on a limited timetable. He hosts Gundam tests, and only has the time to play in Gundam tests. However, he does play other mods. Next buzzkill!

I did, before, try to host a mod every week. My campus has played around with our connections, unfortunately, so I can no longer, however...

It, on average, took eight hours to get a game of SWS going, five for Nanoblobs, one for E&E, three for Gundam. I could never, given periods of up to twenty hours, get a game of Battletech, War Evolution or 1944 going.

this seems a bit extreme. when i decided to try gundam earlier it took me all of 15 or so minutes to get a 4vs4 game together...

See, this is the problem, you consider that a flame, while to me it's just a informationnal statment, an uncontestable truth that is yet contested everyday. It doesn't even say BA/SM are bad, FFS!!!!

Thanks for proving we need more of these threads!

This is why we're trying to redirect people quickly to the best mods, so they don't have to try all and every 214 Spring mods hosted at Unknown-Files to then accidently skip the good ones.

I think if on the mods website they also had their own version of the installer/lobby only included their mod and the maps they like and have the lobby join #mymodmain and not even join #main.
Ok, the BAers starts, by creating their own lobby. From tomorrow on, I don't want to see any BA games in the Spring common lobby. All references to BA should be deleted from the Spring main site shortly after. Then XTA and AA should follow. It only makes sense that the most played mods gets their independency first. I do no really agree that each mod should get is own lobby btw.

What are you talking about? That thread was hillarious. However, there was a point to it and the point was the STATEMENT that there is more to spring then BA and SPEEDMETAL. Spring is not TA on speedmetal engine 1.0.

Boirunner wrote:and that in a thread where the guy SPECIFICALLY CAME FOR THE TA! but yeah, it's mostly you, smoth.
No, he asked what was the best mod but did not list the others, that sort of poll does not allow for other mods. I insisted on him knowing there is more then just TA to spring.
Boirunner wrote:anyway, i made my point. some people understood what i'm saying, and some people didn't. for instance, of course i don't want to forbid people from talking about their mods. neither do i dislike non-ta mods.
you didn't make a point you took my post out of context. Do you really understand english? I am not picking on you, i have had people before who had english as a secondary language and they were really really misunderstanding a lot of things.
Boirunner wrote: if you were so open minded about all mods, i'd see you hosting gundam and ee and swta all the time. but i don't, do i?
Oh yeah, like the other night when wasp and I were trying to play noraus' woody mod? Or the times I have played EE? Or the times I used to play BA? You live in a different timezone, I am not going to report to you with "looky I hosted a game." Most of the time I host gundam because I have very little time, I help a lot of people on this forum and I do a lot of work myself. When I do have the time to test something, I prefer to test my mod because i am working on it. However, just because you never see me host something doesn't mean I do not host other mods. I do but my time is extremely limited.
Boirunner wrote: It looks kinda fun, would take some getting used to, and would certainly takes hours and hours of playing to appreciate the heroes and advanced gameplay aspects.
totally time consuming, I always maintain that it takes a good bit to learn gundam, I cannot honestly tell you that it is easy to learn. It is a bit odd and it is different to say the least.
Boirunner wrote:but like most people, i have limited time to play computer games, and yes, i'll stick to the one i came for, thanks.
There is nothing wrong with that but myself and several others want people to realize and acknowledge that spring is more then just TA engine. I will not stop until people accept and acknowledge that fact.

Boirunner wrote:() PEOPLE WHO CAME FOR THE TA WILL PROBABLY NOT PLAY YOUR NON-TA GAME!

You say that, but i like to think of my game and others as extras in a great free engine and lobby. I promote gundam yes, but I also promote many other mods/games, I have 1000s of post many of which promote other games that run in this engine. I do not promote TA:Styled mods because they are known well enough. ANY OTHER content developer will tell you that I help them where I CAN! Seriously, I always offer help, even if it costs me time on gundam I give to the others!

So do not misunderstand me either, I keep saying it and the key point is that to me spring is TAmods and MANY GAMES that makes me happy, a central engine that can play many very different game packages!
