Grr anti grapichs.
What's with all these people saying that graphics doesnt matter? I tried to explain to a friend that a most complete game is a game that adresses all important aspects of a game such as the gameplay (why it's fun), style (graphics, sounds, setting(time period, location, graphics "Style" ect) and execution (controls, features, GUI, online ect). When i said graphics he immediately said that "Graphics doesnt matter in a game!".
I tried to convince him that it was a big part for some gamers and some games, but he refused to accept it. He would admit that animation was important and when i pointed out that it's part of the "graphics" he disagreed.
I've seen it online, everywhere, extremists almost saying that they like poorer looking games!
Don't get me wrong, i've seen the other side of the idiot pile, the PS3-"lol kiddie games" idiots where graphics is a sole argument for their console...
Graphics enhance gameplay(the style, which is a part of the gameplay IMO), not the other way around. Same with sounds and music. A good game has fitting graphics, music, story, animation and gameplay. Thus the best game has nothing... missing. Cavestory for example, what could really have been IMPROVED onto cavestory? The pixel graphics are in line with the 8bit music and the sounds, and the story is wonderfully told with emotion. I don't see any errors, anything missing.
In short, judge games by the sum of the parts, not the parts themselves.

I think zwzsg was right here http://spring.clan-sy.com/phpbb/viewtop ... &start=100 . Graphics should only represent actual gameplay elements.
Well, this is my point, kind off. How does the game let you decide what the stuff looks like? By NOT SHOWING you of course!rattle wrote:Hum no... games should have fitting graphics, they don't have to be top standard. What I like is when it's up to you how your stuff looks. There are too few games which allow you to do that though...
The truely great game is like a good book, it gets your imagination going and sets the scene, letting you fill in the blanks and get a great experience.
The more detailed graphics, the less is left to fantasy. You know it's like when a girl is sexier with clothes ON not OFF!!!
Nice irony, but are you really sure it's not possible to make something really cool this way, IF it had the gameplay etc to back it up? You could have things like recently much coveted "realistic weapon ranges" and stuff within the immersion.KDR_11k wrote:You're right, in fact I'll replace all models with null objects and set the icon distance multiplier to 0.000000000001, of course not with different icons because that would be graphics. No, you just point at it and read the description! Use your imagination!
That's because books make crappy movies. They're too long and depend too much on seeing in the charicter's head. Books make GREAT...books. Movies make GREAT movies. Sometimes there is crossovers, but normally the movie is better than the book and the book is better than the movie, depending on which came first. I've yet to read a novlization that was better than the movie.
Like the Serenity novlization. Ugh. That was one CRAPPY book. In that case, the movie was better.
EDIT: And then KDR had to go an ninja me. Dang.

Not if it was properly done. In this case, a completly icon based springmod, with good icons. Then you would see what was going on but not the details. Think about it. If they scrapped the 3d in supcom since all you do is icon wars anyway, they could have made the icon war so much better. But this is just an example.KDR_11k wrote:It would be a nightmare to play because you couldn't see WTF is going on.
Of course, but do you seriously not see one of the classical strengths of a book is that the reader makes his own pictures, not just that it came first? That's because books make crappy movies. This discussion obviously got a bit too black&white, either graphics suck or their always make a game better. My point is more subtle, that graphics are a double edged sword. Sure it's shiny and sometimes works great, but sometimes less is more.
I'm a big fan of all things working together to make a good game. Graphics, gameplay and sound. People keep forgetting sound, including it as only an afterthought. But really steller sound effects can make a game so much better. Ever play Arx Fatalis? The graphics aren't all that much to look at anymore, but the sounds are still so atmospheric and well done.
So don't forget sound!

No no, I mean by offering simple ways of customizing the looks of, say, units, interface, what ever. Like playing with LEGO...Zpock wrote:Well, this is my point, kind off.
