Laptops gpu's

Post by BigSteve »

Been looking at laptops recently and I stumbled upon some info anyone buying should know.
If you decide on a laptop with an nvidia 7600, make sure you check the memory interface is not 64 bit.
Apparently some companies sneakily reduced the 7600 128mb and 256mb cards from 128 bit to 64 bit, which helps the battery but smacks the 3d performance really badly.

After hassling more people on the lobby than I can count, and searching google for hours, ( I'm a total pc noob btw, just ask my tech support guys Machio, Lordmatt, quantum, Cabbage, tired errr...Im sure there's more ^^ )
I finally found a way to check the memory interface on windows, you need rivatuner 2.0 final release, that will tell you what "bit" the card is somehwere in its menu. This seems the only way to do it, although I could be wrong.

Don't know if this will help anyone but I thought Id post it as Ive read many dissapointed forum posts on the net from people expecting alot better performance than they're getting.

I think so, have a look at notebookcheck.net just to be on the safe side, they have benchmark page and loads of handy forum discussions soley for laptop stuff.

If you have any doubts though, find a stoe with the model you want and run rivatune 2.0, it'll tell you everything you wanna know, 64 bit baaaad
128 bit and up, gooood :)
