Maelstrom

I got this game a few days ago because the price dropped. It's from the makers of Perimeter and kinda into the same direction: Flawed, imbalanced, strangely fun. It uses the deformable terrain heavily (even includes flowing water that you can build dams against) and the way the aliens flood the map is kinda cool, too (though it seems frustrating and OP until you realize that killing the corresponding mutagene pump drains the water again), leads to quickly changing terrain. One human faction has loads of transformers so you can e.g. turn your tank into a bomber if necessary and even buildings are just transformed vehicles while the aliens get an advantage in water, especially "poisoned" water and have buildings that flood the map with just that.

The terrain deformation looks as nice as Perimeter's but is used for even more stuff.

KDR i heard about that Game in Gamestar - and i thougth the Aliens can freeze the Water they pump up- would be coolf if we had this is as superweapons for spring - rising water - freezing water - and flating terraform crawl bombs...

Those are great Ideas.. so Cup stop derailing the Thread and help to get this things going :)

I don't think the aliens can freeze the water, the Ascension (Kosmitron in the german version) have a cryo trooper but the aliens wouldn't even benefit from ice, they get regeneration in water and are much less restricted than the humans when moving in water (humans can't shoot while swimming, some aliens can, aliens are generally better at melee).

I just wish the aliens were less micro heavy, to make troops you need to hatch them from eggs, you can make the command ship shoot you an egg near each of your main buildings every few seconds but to do so you have to select the building and click the button each time you want an egg, you can't queue eggs like the other factions can. When I complained on the forums (back when the first demo came out) they said it was intentional. I also wish there was a smooth terrain terraform option so you could repair slopes that one of those porcy remnant players turned into a field of rubble.

Also Picasso, you should've been a mapper for Perimeter, that game's map design would be right up our alley.

The game has some neat features Spring could use like weapons that play an "animation" on the terrain to do their shockwaves (the ground rises up and goes down again in the shape of an expanding ring) and the generally higher heightmap resolution. Buildings that automatically terraform the ground they are built on would be useful too, it's annoying that con units have to flatten the ground in Spring (unless you just tellt hem to start already in which case they'll happily ignore the remaining unevenness and just start building).

My friend brought it over to my house the minute you posted this thread and we played a few games multiplayer.

I only played about 5 games (and got owned all but 2 times) and imo that direct-controll thing is really annoying, it increases the hero's power 1000 times.

im a little too inebriated to give a good analysis of the game but I think the engine is really good but the game dosent take advantage of it as well as it could

another problem is the fucking loading times take longer than the games last.

I played the demo but didn't like it too much. Suppose I'll have to try it again...

tbh the game dosent use the engine to its realy potential, but really i cant imagine an RTS that COULD use its potential

The engine has 100% controll over terrain, by making a hill underneath a building it makes the building tilt and break.

if you make a ditch next to a river then the river will flow into it.

Its pretty amazing for an RTS engine, but would take something even more revolutionary to make good use of the features

There were some improvements since the demo and in skirmish/MP it's more interesting than in the campaign. Units can now shoot through friendlies (you know, like collidefriendly=0) which makes infantry a lot easier to use.
