As of yesterday, I'm running Vortex Vista (xp with many vista features and interface). I upgraded to it because as a tech, I need to be reasonably familiar with the vista interface. I must say I love it to death.

My 1 question is, how will it run with a 3800+ single core and 1 gig dual channel ddr2? Thats the main thing holding me back. After trying it out I am in love with the interface. So clean and convenient.

You are affected by it in all aspects.
Echo cancelation doesnt work properly (problems with voice comm programs).
Video playback resolution is being downgraded for protected content.
Overall performance suffers because of encryption in communication between various HW components.

These are features I don't want, I don't need. It's nothing usefull for consumer. It restricts consumer.
And it can still be hacked. So people who want to steal protected content can still do so but all consumers are restricted and have a downgraded performance.

Your processor is fine, but before buying Vista you should probably invest in another gig of ram, it loves ram. It's probably time to stop complaining about Vista and how it sucks, because you can do nothing about it.

^^ he speaks the truth. Whining and moaning really won't do much to help.

No, I am not affected by it, because I will never buy content that requests DRM protection.

Well, actually, it could affect me by raising the cost of the hardware. Hence my annoyance, but lack of anger at Microsoft.

I run a vista test rig for one of the labs I do support for, and it's really quit nice. It uses some more memory that XP, but just a bit and it really isn't wasteful that I've seen, it puts that extra memory to good use with new features. (I mean, what did you expect? It's a 6 year newer program. Of course it has a little bit larger footprint.)

I had a few graphics card issue setting it up, but nothing major. Not sure what card it has, I don't have the specs handy. Nothing top of the line.

Anyway, it's still unusable for me because of the DRM stuff. You would think it wouldn't impact normal business use, but in 3 different cases data imported from our test equiptment was assumed to be premium content (Just because of the way the data was formatted) and restricted. Artificially limiting video playback resolution is one thing when it's a movie. It's another, quite a bit more serious thing when it's actual scientific data, and the resolution is important.

Until they relax some of the DRM restrictions, I can't tolerate Vista.
