want a large or this small close knit-community?

Lets just say by some miracle, this open source project becomes wildy known on the net. Nearly anyone who plays any RTS has Spring on their desktop. On average, there are tens thousands of people playing spring everyday.

Or would you prefer this nice small community where we basically know eachother?

The large, of course. Imagine all the modders/devs that would pop up.

And the warm fuzzy feeling of opensource heros pwning the capitalist pigs.

Nothings keeping you from having a small little community within the big one like a clan, mod-team or "fansite" forum like smoths.

large community

Spring has many games to offer as opposed to just 1, therefore, the more people, the more players other games in spring get, hopefully not just everyone playing a ta knockoff mod that happens now.

There's enough channels for everyone. Let the idiots claim #main.

the more the better as far as i'm concerned, although the game needs a decent single player platform (ie, good AI included for whatever mod is chosen to play), as well as a version to download offered with mods and maps included for the newcomers.

a lot of people download spring, try to join a game and find out they have to download a mod and a map, then just give up. give them something to play out of the box. i also am fond of iamacup's client with the big button that links to his site - this needs to be standard issue guys.

all of this in addition to the resync will make for a game that has a very wide appeal. i want to see thousands of people in that lobby 8)

They get something out of the box, namely XTA or Nanoblobs and Mars, Small Divide or Nano Arena. Unfortunately those aren't the most popular maps and mods but they're probably the best you could include, AA/BA changes too often for a pack in to make sense since you'd just end up with an outdated version and still couldn't join anything (or people would keep playing that version and the mod makers would be annoyed like AF was with the NTAI). Other maps would probably bloat the download too much, we're talking about 20+MB maps here.

Maybe E&E could become the standard mod that ships with Spring.

The ultimate in slow releasing mods would be SWTA.

For being only 1 person, Gundam progresses much farther than swta does with a team more quickly.

Also, SWTA is ancient and has kept up this fine tradition for eons.

large comunnity with ignore button

but getting lots of people into the project should not be a priority, an appealing project makes people come, try and leave, a good, solid game makes people stay

with our small community we get a spamming faggot in the lobby several times a night. with 100 more people, #main WOULD just be spamming faggots.

I'd like more players and so more games I guess...
and imo spring should ship with all the major mods if the makers allowed... BA, XTA, EE, gundam, 1944 etc.

Definitely large. We passed the point of being a very small close-knit community a long time ago. That doesn't mean I'll forget those first months where the lobby averaged like 0-20 people. :-)

There's something really cool about having a small little community with a kickass engine like spring.
It's like when you discover an amazing new band that nobody knows about, sometimes you want it to stay that way, when everyone is listening to it and the band becomes super popular, listening just doesn't feel the same anymore, like when I discovered the spice girls... err... I mean metallica ^^

The benefits of a large community are too high to ignore though so I guess Id go with that, I started playing spring when xta was pretty much the only mod kicking around and there was 40 people in the lobby occasionally, now we have loads of new mods, maps, widgets, ai's... its like an aladdins cave of open sourced goodies!

smoth, stop sayin nobody plays.. I would play if I wasn't so busy on my mod.. I played it once and loved it, but I don't have time...

I'm sure there are more people who like to play Gundam.. It is a very good game, ya know.. And you are an exceptional modder, for bein a single person..

Yeah, a larger Spring playerbase would be fine, but I don't want them spammin up the forums with stupidity...
