Problems in running spring

Post by MAXDDARK »

Total Annihilation Spring is a total remake of the legendary strategy game Total Annihilation.
I successfully installed this game via : http://fbo.no-ip.org/cgi-bin/twiki/view/Linux/DebSpring on Ubuntu
but this site doesn't update anymore and a new version came out.

I've downloaded all the maps and mods (about 1.2 GB !) and installed spring from the official site : http://spring.clan-sy.com/wiki/SetupGuide

but I got a problem, I manage to get to the first screen which I choose maps and mods from but once I choose it and start the game it quits :

maxim@maxim:~$ spring
FATAL: fglX11CMMFreeSurface: firegl_FreeBuffer() failed!
FATAL: fglX11FreeBuffer: firegl_FreeBuffer() failed!

other 3d games run fine
and I do not think that I have a problems with my xorg as this game worked fine before
can you help please ?

P.S
someone at the taspring IRC channel said it might be a problem with my DRI, but I don't know how to check it.
I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro video card.

here is my xorg :

I use the property drivers as they work MUCH better with my video card.

No harm in backing up xorg.conf, changing it to load up opensource driver & get latest opensource driver.
And would be very easy to undo, just replace your new xorg.conf with the backup.

Had it working before with Gentoo & opensource driver. Cant remember why it wouldnt work for me with the ati drivers, not to mention their drivers = nightmare :P

At very least u narrow it down to driver issue (which it prob is)

all the other 3d games work great
so if I change the xorg to use the free drivers, they might not work correctly.

So u are unwilling to take 10 mins to test out the opensource drivers.

And not likey u see ati update them anytime in future especially since there still using opengl 1.2 & not 1.3.

So u are basicly stuck then because its a driver problem.

I have this exact same problem/error, but only if I try to run a mod besides XTA. Any ideas ? It must be game binary or data related, not graphics driver, since I can play XTA mod just fine without any problems using AAI ai.

yeah, I do NOT think it's a graphic or video card related
I can run the old debspring well with no problem

Just for reference, I have an ATI Radeon 9600 PRO card and I'm using the latest opensource drivers.

I used the one that came with Ubuntu Edgy for the first time and it couldn't run a single 3d game properly.
maybe I'm installing it wrong or something.

The open r300_dri.so driver works, but it's beta software.

On my 64bit memory X700 it crashes with spring for unknown reasons without a pattern. (could be hardware failure) And it's barely fast enough to be playable. Nanoblobs doesnt run at all, because of an incompatible graphics something something. XTA works ok.

Spring is a rather intense game for your gl subsystem though, Other games (q3a/flightgear) work more reliable with r300_dri.so.

so from what I understand from your reply I should stick with the property drivers.

If you don't care about licenses you could also run windows.
But politics and associated integration problems aside the proprietary drivers should perform better than the dri drivers when they work.

I used to run the propreitary drivers, but had all kinds of problems when trying to play another game called Tremulous. It is a quake3 engine based game, and the lightmaps would lag the heck out of my video for some reason, but switching to opensource radeon drivers fixed the problem.

Well, at least I've learned that next time I buy computer hardware, I'm getting nvidia.

It has to be said ati is the fastest 3d card supported by open drivers.
(PCIE X850) as an indirect result of their cooperation with free software developers in the r200 era. (but not since)

Nvidia isn't a real longterm solution, in terms of openness, they even use another direct rendering standard, and had semi remote root bugs in their drivers.

I wonder how intel's 3d chips perform, has anyone played spring under linux on the open intel driver?
