Any application you download and run online could potentially be a virus. Spring could have been a virus. Use you're brains here, half a dozen trusted comunity members have verified already that this is legitimate. Just because it's closed source doesn't mean it's an any higher risk of being a virus then any other peice of software you've downloaded off the internet. Hell, did you worry about your graphics drivers being a virus when you downloaded and ran them? They are closed source.
THE POINT, is this is a silly program that provides no benefit to users (it appears to just feed someone's ego), that they are forced to use to play games with this host. It makes no allowance for users, such as espylaub, who have slower machines but use settings which are appropriate for them. While this is obviously not a virus, I don't think this sort of thing should be encouraged.
Swift is right, "anything can be a virus." Which is why I don't run anything from a source I don't trust... Hell, I won't even run some of the AIs for spring because of this. I know I'm too cautious: but I haven't gotten a virus yet (atleast I hope so
).
On to a 'better' point: something like this should be incorporated into the lobby.

LordMatt put another right point hereLordMatt wrote:THE POINT, is this is a silly program that provides no benefit to users (it appears to just feed someone's ego), that they are forced to use to play games with this host. Even if a have a top notch computer, I will keep playing with anyone in the community, even if it will cause some lag in game.

HEY GUYS I HAVE AN IDEA
LETS MAKE EVERYONE DOWNLOAD A CLOSED SOURCE APP FROM A DISREPUTABLE SOURCE THAT TRANSMITS YOUR SYSTEM'S VITAL STATS TO A CENTRAL SERVER IN ORDER FOR YOU TO BE ABLE TO PLAY A MASSIVELY OVERSIZED GAME ON A SHITTY UNFINISHED GAME WITH A HOST THAT REGULARLY KICKS PEOPLE MID GAME FOR NO REASON AT ALL
ISN'T THAT A GREAT IDEA GUYS

...and since you play almost exclusively 16 player greenfields spamfests, this is a common occurence...jj wrote:i dont kick people mid-game, only when they lag a lot
...and it's obvious that you really don't know much about what determines performance.but now that are only people that didnt run springmark
Let's take me as an example. You'd love my SpringMark stats. 3.33GHz P4 processor, 1GB RAM. Yet I'd almost assuredly lag your game to hell. Why? Not only am I running on a laptop, my laptop is a make/model that has a common overheating problem which reduces performance by up to 50% during long periods of high-load usage.
Someone running a measely 1.6GHz processor (not Celeron) on the lowest settings, with decent hardware backing it up, in a desktop, would most likely not lag your game at all.
Yet who would you kick for not being good enough for your game? The latter.
But whatever. I have no issue with SpringMark as long as it doesn't somehow become a community standard that everyone demands. If it's restricted to greenfields/speedmetal games, go ahead... less people need to play those anyways.
