Blender, cant get different textures/colours on same mesh
Hi, i'm not sure if this is the right section, i think so tho :)
I'm using blender to make models etc, i thougt id give a shot at making a Mod. But first thing to do is make models.
I use blender, and ive used it in the past but i forgat how to assign different textures to the same mesh.
And its silly to always tab out and make a new mesh because..well cause its silly :)
Anyone here can tell me how its done in blender?
The Tuts are a bit useless...or my brain is useless :)
Thx in advance

For the sake of arguement lets say Person A is doing what your doing but has managed to go further along the process.
'A' has a ncie untextured blender model.
'A' textures his model in blender
'A' tries to put his model in UpSpring
Upspring cant open blender models
'A' tries to export to something upspring can understand
'A' finds his model has lost all its textures
'A' tries to export to another format
'A' gets the same results
'A' is introduced to UV mapping (modern texturing technique)
'A' is also introduced to wings3d (superior modelling tool)
'A' manages to get his model all textured into UpSpring and sees it ingame.
UV mapping for the win!

Wow i just asked on how to do it.

All of u , thanks for taking the time to post BUT answer my qeustion please.
Pfff well whatever snotty comments.
So far for asking one of u for help :S
And what ur just doing is telling me what an amateur i am.
GEEEEZ i only asked for some help.
Thx for nothing
BTW: I'm used at working with Blender, why bother to learn a different program while in the FAQ Blender is sudgested as a Modeling tool.
screw this, i'm outy good community my ass

I only asked how to put 2 colours on 1 Mesh in Blender.
The Blender forums are even less helpfull then what ive experienced here.
But nvm. I cant use Blender apparently.
Maybe i can get one of those superior tools :S and learn to UV map as modern people do :S
And the faq should remove Blender as a model tool if it cant be used proper for spring.
Thx anyway
Looked at Wings, how is this supposed to be superior to blender.
can Wings animate? Noooooo, Does wings have an built in game engine? Noooo.

In the edit tab, "links and materials", click the new button in the materials block, select the faces you'd like to assign to it, click assign. That only works for rendering, not the realtime engine or Spring.
Blender can be used properly for Spring, it supports UV mapping and has lots of tools for that. It's not a Spring Model Editor so it obviously has lots of features that aren't relevant to Spring. Multiple materials on a mesh is one of them. Learn how it works and you'll understand what you can and cannot do with a model that's meant to go into Spring.

You don't need either for spring, mainly because spring doesn't use bone animation or what ever blender can do.Looked at Wings, how is this supposed to be superior to blender.

Anyway wings is fairly useful as a model editor for spring. It's not as powerful as blender but a lot of people (including me) prefer it over blender or other apps because it's a really easy to use (subdivision) modeler.
Blender on the other hand is as much useful for spring as any other modeling tool. Just take a look at the works of KDR (GINTA, CvC, Kernel Panic models).
Thank u, tried the assign but it wont work, i do know it worked in the past.
Maybe u could clarify something for me.
I got my uncoloured, un textured model rdy.
Now i wont to put it in upspring. It cant hold several textures...but i can colour as i wont? or what r the limitations? Thats what i'm not getting.
But thx for the info man. On topic, pollite and helpfull :) just my cuppa :)

I have used both... went through a lot of blender noob to pro.. I am still using wings3d.
If I want to make normal maps, play with smoothing groups etc I'll use blender but for spring modeling I think wings is the way to go. It is a matter of simplicity over over complicated stuff.
For my class game project I used blender and wings. I like many of the features of blender but for spring it is just a cannon ball on a fly.

Not having used wings' UV mapper I can't really give a comparison, but I can tell you that Blenders is reasonably easy to use. Of course, I haven't gotten used to the new Unwrapping stuff (I just begin to understand LCSM and then they go and change it on me
), but the Archimap UV unwrapper (now the smart unwrap) is fairly useful.
The main features that Blender has over Wings right now is the Ambient Occlusion baking and texture painting. Texture painting can be ignored, but AO baking is a really easy way to add a lot of realism.

Blender can do that but Spring can't use it.Snipawolf wrote:How good is blenders animating system? Can it render decently awesome complex animations and scenes? Nothing like the Armored Core 4 intro (Damn, that was one HAWT video...), but something decently okayish...
edit: I've seen some work, in a few years I may be able to top it
