nope, a real game has gone beyond the skills of any one person. Things are very complicated as you will need sound, animations etc. Sure a basic asteroids clone is possible and maybe a very rough fps after a looong time but realisticly... I think it is not possible for one person to go it alone. Standards are just too high for that.

Take someone like myself. I am a capable artist a good programer and an ok sound editor. I cannot really do that great a job on sound. My composition work is worthless and I am not yet capable of normal maps.

I could likely program and do many models, maps and sounds but it would be crap and not worth the effort. That is me we are talking about. I am not that awesome either. Most people can either do sound art or program... few people have skills in all of them and if they do... a game is a waste of their time.

To those who say... well, with enough time anything can be done. That is bullshit. We all know real life gets in the way. Hell, do you think I am working on gundam forever? not likely... I have a life and a girlfriend and unless I have something wrong down there(not likely) there will be smoth spawn someday to take up my time. So unless we have some rich guy who is SUPER talented, has no interest in sex and a drive to achieve a very grueling goal... not happening.

I am a huge freeware fan. I played the shit out of icey towers, tremulous, alien arena, block land, nexuiz, wargus and spring is my favorite project... this is just an engine that needed a content team.. so people are actively making content..

no man is an island and the world is a big place to even develop something half-assed you are going to need more then your self. That is the fact of the matter. Impossible alone possible but not always probable with a team.

I am all about encouragement and more freegames for me to play but I also hate seeing all of this bullshit pat on the back feel good stuff. Some things are beyond most peoples abilities, scheduals and life needs. Making a free game is one of them. Like I said... you need to be so wealthy that you can afford not to work for years and so talented that you can do it all.

I have yet to meet the guy who can and I look at a lot of free games.

What Smoth said is true. I coulden't even get very far with a mod and I'm just one guy.

But I do know that a group of people can do a lot more than a single man alone. Like...Nazi Germany!

Oh wait, that's a bad example. Oh wait, there's a gooder example closer at hand: The guys who made Star Wreck. Thats a quality piece of film there and it was made by a bunch of Finnish star treck/babylon 5 fans with lots of computers. And it's been bought up by Universal for relase in the states!

And look at the Yankspankers! They made Spring. And we love Spring. Or at least I love Spring. Do you love Spring? I sure do.

So, the moral of the story is: A man alone will get trampled by the Real Life Monster. But a group will hold the Real Life Monster at bay with swords and spear and machine guns. Takatakataka, slash, ker-ping, pow ker-splat and so on and so on...

Still, I believe all truely great games has one man with a Vision at the center doing most of the important stuff that matters, aka "to get it done right is to do it myself".. But there's no reason not to hand down lesser tasks to a minion, or if absolutely needed, minions.
