Dynamic Music Idea: Make Spring worth listening to

Post by Slamoid »

Here's an idea for dynamic music *mixing*. Defaults should be changed via mod's .tdf tags.

5 tracks

[Track1] Volume to 100% when no enemies within 200ft of camera
[Track5] Mix up when altitude of camera is within 100 ft of sea level
[Track2] Mix up when enemies are within 200 ft of camera
[Track3] Mix up when camera altitude is over 200 ft (Strategic/Aircraft)
[Track4] Mix up when Nuke or LRPC starts firing

Mixing tracks like this, especially if the music where custom-made for the mod, as in mixing in different insturments, would provide a very epic sounding custom soundtrack whenever the game's circumstances changed to fit the music.

If spring ever where to have a built-in music system, I would think it should be somthing like this.

I think we'd all just settle for a mod-defined list of randomly played MP3s. KISS.

ogg vorbis FTW.

I always have a music player on anyway, no point in random tracks - either make it as the proposal goes (hard, almost not worth it) or don't do that at all.

This would be fun. I remember that the original TA had something similar, with the musics varing depending of how much action was going on down there.

Why not both? I really love this in that it would mix in different tracks. That would be so cool. I wonder if there's a music format that supports it properly? If we had a media player built into spring we could set it up so there is a mod default that is over ridable by the player. If the mod wanted to do it with mixing they could, and if they wanted a random playlist that would also be possible. I'd also probably like another dynamic standard, similar to TA's where you have normal building music most of the time, and if you are attacked it starts playing an action track for a few minutes.

Of course since the media player was integrated there would be no reason a player couldn't override any given mod playlist with a private playlist via options.

but if sooo many ppl ask for this feature, why not give it to them.
I have an idea how it could be done very individiual:

- every mod can have a folder called "music"
- in this folder there are 2 other folders "war" "peace"
- ppl can put soundtracks into these folders and can have individual music for different mods
- music in the "war" folder will played when units begin to fire or get hit (more than one time) and warmusic will stay as long as every 10 seconds a unit is fireing or got hitten. Else the music gets less volume and peace music begans.

shouldnt be so hard to program?

i m a very bad programmer, else i would try that.
But theoretically all the "patch" should do is to ask the game if your units are under attack or attacking (this should already be possible cause you get unit under attack warnings) and than a simple start random sound from folder command and you need a timer which restarts every 10 seconds if another under attack situation happens.

This thread belongs in the feature request section. Mods please move?

I think it is a great idea. But it is also pretty expensive in terms of programming time to what you get. I can run my music player and spring at the same time and get 90% of the coolness. If someone wants to code a codec independent music player into the spring engine, I don't think anyone is going to stop you, but the devs have enough work trying to make a working game without trying to replicate 80% of the functionality of iTunes as well. Perhaps if there was a way to control mplayer (just because there are versions of it for EVERY operating system and linux disto) through system messaging it might be less coder intensive.
