Unwanted Feature - specs erase start points

Post by RogerN »

Nasty spectators can erase start points (and other drawings), causing havoc in team games. Might want to address this issue. It became a real problem in a game today - we couldn't figure out who was doing it at first.

What's funny was after we kicked the spectator causing the trouble, we did the exact same horrible wrong start positions.

Moved to feature requests. It would be nice if the game somehow showed which spect was drawing or erasing (perhaps a little pen or eraser icon next to their name in .info). That would help with kicking the spects who think its a good idea to draw peni all over the map, or otherwise make the game less watchable for others.

Ehr, the topic is sort of misleading, it's not an unwanted feature, but a bug, I'm pretty sure.

Spectators can use this bug to give players information about the enemy. For example drawing the words yes and no and asking a spec a question in ally chat. Spec then erases the wrong answer telling the allies whats happening.

That is a very uncommon act. As it is, I would like the host to be able to say whether erasing writing by specs only affects their view, or that of those ingame.

you can see that in the replay, so it's not a big issue. specs can always give away info by non-spring means, so i wouldnt bother fixing this too much. also deleting spawnpoints does only delete the visual marker, you still start there afaik (seen it today on altored).

trepan and I tested this and could not replicate the problem. Please give details on how to replicate this.

Ok you've just started, and its choose ingame pos. Your on altored with 6 allies, and they've all picked start positions. A spectator has deleted all the start position markers. Where do you start?

For clarification, it is the markers that are being erased by spectators. The start positions themselves work just fine. But the problem arises when a spectator erases the markers, making it look like nobody is starting it a certain spot when there's actually someone already there.

No special setup was needed to duplicate this, I just used ` + right click as usual.

I think it's great that spectators can see the drawings made by players, and even make their own drawings for other spectators. But it would be nice if spectators were forbidden from removing the drawings made by players, since that's kindof interfering with the game.

trepan and I tested that and could not replicate it. He was more than willing to try and fix the problem but we could not find a problem.

Could've been one of my allies having fun and deleting my points right after I told RogerN to do so to test (since we had huge problems with start positions over someone deleting them all the time which were mysteriously fixed after a spectator was kicked)

Just an idea - maybe you can only delete drawings/markers belonging to the team that you're currently "viewing"? I don't know what the correct word is... you know how you can press 0-9 and see that persons's resources?

I don't know if that theory is correct. I do know that I could duplicate the problem easily when we tested it next game.

i thought specs couldn't affect the drawings of players regardless of team...

to me is sounds like an ally did it...

The second time it happened, I was the one who did it. And I was a spectator. Zell can confirm.

It could've still been an ally who did it exactly when I told you to.

Not that I see why even allies are allowed to erase start points.
