Dear God - I remember having to do that too (with Privateer) ...
You're scaring me.

P.S. - That and Master of Orion are my all-time favorites. :-)

our first comp didnt even have windows, it was DOS, and you had to type in commands to get anywhere, it was kinda fun, I miss old zone66, but even using the DOS box programs it refuses to run on my compy now, such a shame. May the classics be remembered always lol

Wow, I missed this nostalgia thread. Yeah, I remember fiddling with the EMM386 and Himem stuff to get SC2 working. Those were the days- having 4 different boot disks depending on which game you wanted to play.

I have some maniacal schemes for an SC2-based Spring mod, but I'm a lazy bum with a full-time-job, so it'll never happen.

For any of you SC fans there's a windows remake of Star Control 2 (was about 400 MB all together), google for a link.

It's not just a remake, UQM is the original game. It's the source/resources from the 3DO version, hacked into a PC form.

Yes that's more accurate, never played the 3do version nor the original though, don't like it much either.

the game's story was what made it interesting, flying around, figuring stuff out etc.

As a note you will never find out why melnorms deck changes colors.

It wasn't just that - the combat system was wonderful. I got SC2 because I was a fan of SC1 - I didn't even know it was an adventure game until I got it (SC1 was a simple turn-based strategy game with the combat-system from SC2).

So many RPGs crush you with boredom. SC2 remained exciting to the end (well, I guess there were some dead spots of resource harvesting and mapping quasispace portals).
