I dont play against players for one, i dont think my connection could handle it, and i dont see the point in playing games where opponents rush with swarms of lvl 1 units. Thats pretty much like playing unlim ammo in a shooter game, kinda not as fun in my opinion. Much more rewarding to break down a pre-established base - those last 3 sentences are purely opinion and by no means truth or fact.
I liked the old TA neverrush ai, gave me a short time to build then thumped me with a huge army and whilst i engaged that it would be spamming its base def and more units.
But to answer the general responses to my first post. Yes massing defenses over an hour long period is suicide against a player, and no matter how good those defenses reach, a player will take them down (but there would be no massing def in the first place, simply no time). My theory only applies in Human vs AI and has no point in player vs player, and i am quite sure i wouldnt stand a chance in an online game lol. Unless there is anti-rushing rules of sufficient time for me to execute my strategy, i'd just be target practice.
When armies dont work

Harrassment is an important part of the game, it's necessary to slow your opponent's teching. In fact it's the whole reason T1 even exists, if nobody harrasses and instead waits until he has an army that can actually win the game (instead of just wrecking a few important bits and making it easier for future attacks to win) most players will be T2 before the attacks happen. Rushing means sacrificing your economy to build up an army faster than anyone who tries to play normally can deal with. A big "feature" of a rush is that if it fails your economy is far behind that of the opposition.
Hum... I think harrasement is only really important is porcing maps. In expansion maps it can be effective, but its more important to capture more area than your enemy.KDR_11k wrote:Harrassment is an important part of the game, it's necessary to slow your opponent's teching. If you harass your enemy well enough youll never have an army at your doorstep. Your enmys expansion will be stunted and yours overproductive, your need for defences will be lessened, and your enemies production placed in porc mode.
Attack is the best form of defence, keep your enemy on their tippy toes and generally take charge.
If you dont harass then you're gonna end up sending a big army at a well defended player rather than a severly weakened busy player. That player could have a surprise up his leeve such as a rushed nuker or a krog or a bigger army waiting for yours to be crushed by defencive buildings, or an army in hiding waiting for you to attack so it can move in unnoticed.
This is pressure strategy. There are other ways of playing the game than this but this is an effective general strategy in most RTS games. A good example of this is when XTA Pros use their commanders offensively to push back the enemy that little bit more at the front line, or the similair tactics used in populous with shamans.

I prefer not to play players; my connection is unstable, so I can take 15 minutes building up my forces only to have a "send error" take me out. So I play AI, and have a fun time.kineticdeath wrote:I dont play against players for one, i dont think my connection could handle it, and i dont see the point in playing games where opponents rush with swarms of lvl 1 units. I should really restate my position. I can see how level 1 works, and i can strongly see the benefits of fast hits, especially on a smaller map for stalling growth and progress of an enemy. I also suspect it takes a fair bit of skill and planning to make a rush work or the consequences may be fatal for the rusher.
My opinion was based purely on how i enjoy RTS, and i'm fast finding out its totally innefective on anything except the hugest map (with aircraft disallowed lol). I recently downloaded a mod for OTA where lvl 1 units were rebalanced compared to even super units, turned around my style for that mod as enough medium vehicles could stomp even 100 level 3 supers. Perhaps i should even try playing online, I think i could learn quite a bit (after i get over the whole getting my but kicked thing lol).
