my new digital painting

Post by maestro »

hi, since the topic is Art and modeling I put one of my art here
the pic title is '2 shark' (a meat shark and an iron one)
THis done with Paint Shop PRO-9, no additional plug in.
I dont even use any vector, all was hand drawn with mouse (I dont have digital pen). The only thing that is not OOB is some downloaded brush...
The only 'filter' I use is blur and wave

hopes you like it... :)

This is very nice. The only criticism I can come up with is that the shark's 'tail' looks a bit strange (its the angle it is coming down at or something, gives a strange bend to the body).

The tail kind of looks like a foot. The light effects look really good though.

I think the issue with the tail is that the foreshortening isn't quite correct, so it looks odd. Foreshortening is one of the hardest things to get right in illustration.

As stated already, there are little problems all over it, but still, considering it was painted with the mouse and uses none of the extremely useful plugins and filters generally used by digital artists it's quite impressive. Not photo realistic, sure, but still quite believable.

It's not bad for a mouse drawing, I couldn't do better. The submarine could use some corrections here and there and is missing some details to make it look like it is in use, i.e. scratches and the like. The shark is in dire need of some perspective shading as Zsinj mentioned earlier.

It's not so much the shading as the form; part of the tail should appear obscured by the tail which is 'infront' of it, as it is closer to the camera. If you hold your arm directly at you, it is a bit of an oval shape, with much of the arm being obscured by perspective; many people have a lot of trouble grappling with foreshortening; it took me ages to get it, and I still don't have it quite downpat.

Another nice eyecandy sort of thing that you could do is have a shadow cast by the submarine, as it blocks the light coming down from above. Remember that with the way the water works, it doesn't just cast a shadow on the surface (which there is none), but in a line directly from the submarine (imagine you were using trace perspective lines to calculate the shadow, then leave the lines in and shade them).
