Summer Internship

Post by jouninkomiko »

Sorry guys for my non involvement lately on the forums... I just started my internship at Microsoft for the summer and my computer hasn't exactly gotten here yet. The bad news is that technically, I'm not allowed to work on any GPL-ed software during my employment here (over the next 3 months) unless I get permission from the legal department, which I'm working on getting at the moment. Until then, I can really only work on my local copy of the lobby and AI interface, which I can then email to SJ or someone to commit. So work on that stuff is definitely almost at a standstill at the moment :(

I hope so too...

I always wondered what it would be like to work on an OSS project while working at a company as a programmer. :?

Why would you want to work for microsoft? Especially if they want to impose such bullshit restrictions on you.

In fact, surely it is illegal for them to controll what you do in your own free time in such a manner?

Well, its actually because of the license conflicts that exist. If you take code from microsoft and put it into GPL form, it could be a major loss for the company. That is why if you read closely in the GPL, it talks about receiving permission from your employer before starting any GPL projects.

Good luck jouninkomiko,

Microsoft is a great company and the last of the companies
that take care of their employees. Its not too many companies
that do that now. I hope MS lets you continue to work on the
TA Spring project.

Have fun .... at MS ....

For those Anti-Microsoft nay-sayers, i would like to propose to you that you engage in the Ten Years test. How to take it:

wait ten years.
See who is better off.

jounonmiko, best of luck- and when you're a millionare, be sure to send some of that our way :p

Well as long he dont work in the Game Department doing a similar work there should be no issue. However Spring for the new XBOX360 would be quite cool 8) Its normal that company dont allow ther staff doing the same things at work, and lets say if some MS employee would contribute to a OSS project which is similar like he is working on there migth be some legal issues.
However i guess its quite tough there and maybe you dont want to programm in your free time.

exactly maylander, that's the argument im going to use :) yea, ill be programming a ton of hours per week... but spring is an important project to me, so i'll definitely continue putting "free" time to work on it. hopefully ill hear back soon...

and also, m$ IS a great company to work for. they take care of their employees and definitely put alot of work into making their products the highest quality possible. the amount of testing and verification tests every build must go through is absolutely ridiculously long and thorough. maybe ill get a peek at xbox360! but then if i did, i wouldnt be able to tell you about it. oh well :-D

jouninkomiko, good luck at your new job. However, I ask that you do not email SJ any patches until you have permission from Microsoft Legal. Also, please do not look at any game, simulation, or networking code while you are there if you wish to keep working on the project. Microsoft would LOVE for GPLed projects to get contaminated with their code so that they can make a big show of how the GPL is really all about stealing. They'd also probably love it if it were some small shitty project like ours so that it would be difficult to rally defensive donations for it. Imagine if SCO had won their case. That is exactly the position you could put us in.

Microsoft does a lot of things right, and I hear they take REALLY good care of their own, but please be very careful. This is no joke, and we should probably get the FSF lawyers involved on our side just in case. Note that I am not a lawyer, but that I am afraid of them.

How do you know this already?

Yes, they sure must take good care of they're own because Unhappy workers are very dangerous to them and it can cost them alot of money and reputation.

# Back in the times when the Internet began on Windows, no one knew how to program in HTML and there was no accessible software to produce HTMLs. So people just used the "view HTML code" and copied other's pages and modified some. The thing was that it added code especially crafted to make the HTML page not work on other browsers.
# Some time ago, Microsoft paid 26(?) Million US$ to Opera software because it was proved that Microsoft was using specific code in it's pages of MSN to make the pages look bad in the Opera Browser.
Storm(?) did said once that he doesn't uses Opera or Firefox because web pages often looked bad in them. No wonder.
# The model of Sun's Java is, compile once, run everywhere. Some time ago, Microsoft paid to Sun Microsistems, 900 Million US$ + 350 Million for future infractions concerning the fact that an IDE/compiler made by Microsoft was compiling Java code in a specific manner that it made it only work in Windows.

Anyway, for whatever reason, if they treat you well, that is a good thing for you.

That is, if it doesn't bother you to have people sneak mind altering pills into your food, people trying to give you an injection of mind control chemicals while your on the elevator, watching subliminar images on your screen monitor, beeing hipnotized once a week.
Do not, i repeat, do not ever stop using an Aluminum hat!!!

I bet they even made you sign an agreement saying that you can not talk about anything you've seen in there. Ho, wait, you must have...

Funny and sarcastic stuff apart, after your internship at Microsoft, you will surely have something impressive to show on your Curriculum Vitae. If you were good enough to Intern on Microsoft, the most successfull software company in the world, you must certainly be good enough for they're's.
