AF, have you tried the settings I described? Did that make a difference, with a 5000-series nVidia card?
As for SM3, the main thing I'm seeing is that specular highlighting via the normalmap is probably going to need a color imput- now that I have solved the black-lines problem (at least, in NanoBlobs's next build) the big issue is going to be that my attempt to make a fancy SM3 map might be undercut by highlights coming out too bright.
FPS optimization. Some tests.

I disagree, now you're able to see both metal and terrain texture. That gives you a better reference.Metal distribution only makes the map slightly darker, a much worse representation than the near black of SMF.
I've fixed the zbuffer problems too (causing water etc..)

Argh for the most part only 1 option was different for me, trilinear optimization, but had no noticeable effect. Other than that a lot fo the option just werent there, unsupported by geforce fx series I guess.
Playing XTA 8.1 average framerates
0.73 50-80fps
0.74 2-30fps
I was just asked to leave a game for lagging it so much, and that game wasnt as much as I've handled in the past yet things were a heck of a lot more laggy.
While I'm aware my PC is not top spec at all I've managed to play spring rather well so far but now its just getting to become a nightmare of lag.
And my stepdads computer, I used to be able to just barely play big speedmetal games on it at min settings, and thats out the window now, spring is too laggy to do anything with it now.
SM3 lagged even worse. In SMF it doesnt lag till explosions are happening, explosions seem to cause a lot fo lag for me, SM3 lags immediatly however. I had whakamunga tiri and nothing on the map but a URC commander and it lagged as hell. Yet in the past I've been able to run with the same settings and get much faster play.
Currently I run at min settings with decals on the first notch up and coloured terrain elevation, I used to be able to turn on decals at max and have reflective textures turned on.
I also notice, sometimes my PC spends ages with the detail texture applied to the map, I honestly wouldnt mind if the map was reduced in detail so it just displayed the average colour of each quad or at least turn off the detail texture.
Particle effects are also a big slowdown, especially custom script generated effects, whena major explosion occurs nowadays its a lot slower on my PC and lags a lot longer. For example a com explosion in BAA lags my comp but it continues lagging for 10 secs after its dissapeared.

Maybe some people can re evaluate sm3? I think its pretty much ready for "mass consumption"
