SpringSP v0.8

Post by Android_X »

Hi everyone,

Sorry for not keeping you updated with SpringSP progress but I now present version 0.8 with minimap preview  8) (thank you Ray for the minimaps)

Changes:
*Added minimap preview
*Added a new window for map selection
*SpringSP now caches some mod info which means faster loading
*AI players show up in the list of players for replays
*When adding a skirmish player a new team color is automatically chosen
*Added a skirmish option: diminishing metal maker returns
*Fixed a bug that started a skirmish with you as a player insted of a spectator

Sweet :-)

Does it detect maps in .SDD files? Mods in .SDD files?

Yes SpringSP does detect .SDD maps and mods. .SDD mods were working in version 0.7 maybe maps too but I didn't test .SDD maps.

It isn't in the SVN because it is my own project and it isn't open source(although I have recived some coding conributions and I do make the source code available). I don't mind if it is packaged with Spring but that isn't up to me.

Everytime after loading the mods it gave me an error : "An error occured while saving Mod cache. 76 path not found".

Make sure that the cache directory exists. If you extracted the zip file in to the directory where you installed Spring then it should have been created for you. Have a look at:

Spring_install\lobby\SSP\Cache

If the cache directory doesn't exist then create it.

why package things with spring when its so much work to get the devs to even consider it and stop arguing as to why the fact that there is a unit called XXX etc.... petty (see #sy log about packing Nanoblobs for more info on petty crap arguments, eg about how it has to few units (wtf), that have no real basis in reality and are really about who can be arsed to update the contributors list.)

the argument against nano blobs was the fact it had not enough units and would put a bad image of the spring engine across├óÔé¼┬ª. phail

To be honest theres about 3 people who will block just about every change you make so its easier to make it, put it on unknown files, spam main and hope for the best.

And that works best.

And because spring SP has been mainly distributed and publicised via me and my NTai releases, infact leading to the myth that I am its creator.

How is that a reason for it not being shipped with spring?
If it were shipped with spring, it would have to look pretty professional as it would be the first thing many new players use when loading spring for the first time. (im not saying it doesnt :-) , but the devs might think otherwise)

Why distribute something that most people who would use it already have it?

95% of people who would use this already in the community who would use this already have it via threads liek this and NTai downloads. The rest sue tasclient, as do noobs who arent pointed to this in #main.

Also this program isnt GPL and you cant distribute non GPL content with spring (Albeit the breaking of the license via XTA).

you try getting something to be included in the installer that is fully functional and is useful and not copyrighted. you will understand. (nanoblobs)

Because this is a good software that will help ease nubs into the game. I don't think the other devs would try to block it (they don't seem block AIs). I think the addition of SpringSP would make the game a more complete package, but Android_X would have to want to have it included and make inquiries on #sy.

As someone who used to include something with the spring install I'd reccomend against it as it is a huge annoyance when it comes to releases and having to sync your release cycle with the spring release cycle.

It also poses a problem in that people cba upgrading to the latest version and instead judge the version included with spring despite bugfixes and major updates being on websites. A lot fo peopel are of the opinion NTai is total crap because they saw XE7.5, despite XE9 being available, and I can see this happening with AAI to some lesser extent at the moment.

So considering the frequency of Spring SP updates I dont think it would be a wise decision to sync its update cycle with that of spring.

I think the way SpringSP is distributed at the moment is OK. It's not too hard to find for those looking for a way to play offline.

Like I said before I don't mind if the devs want to distribute it with Spring but I have no intention of trying to do so. If the devs think that it would benifit Spring to have SpringSP in the distribution, then maybe I could consider making the license GPL or LGPL.

So unless the devs ask to have SpringSP packaged or a giant mob of TA obsessed fans dressed up as krogoths and razorbacks threaten me, SpringSP can stay how it is.
