negative handicaps
like the topic says, allow handicaps to limit an experienced player's income, as opposed to boosting the noobs'
really? I never saw threats? I just saw someone who wouldnt leave me alone when i told him I was pissed off and didnt wanna speak to them, after being lured into a battle deliberatly with hugely uneven odds in order to satisfy an ego that'd been bruised by a nasty defeat a few minutes earlier despite me clearly saying several times I just wanted a fun laid back game and not someone going all out and toying with me.
And there is no ban function on chanserv either.
And I have asked for handicaps in the past only to be frowned upon and laughed off.

oooh now you lie at me.
mods: i am not flaming, i am defending my reputation with my account of events.
I played a normal game. I beat AF, with mostly bombardment, and that takes a while. He has specified that he wanted a laid back game, so my killing blow was not extremely quick, i was enjoying having a strong economy.
Post game, i get kicked from #XTA, log back in, kicked again. Repeat about 20 times, with AF at first not answering my pm asking why i was being kicked from a room i spend more time than he does in. He eventually replies with "you had better not try a stunt like that again" and, eventually under duress, lets me back in (muted at first).
I do not host stacked games.
I do not play spring purely to win, or feel my ego is wounded when i am beaten, ask M0ng, Myg, Barto, Noruas, lfing, Gurrag and numerous others who beat me often if i whine afterwards.
I enjoy the social aspect of gaming quite a lot, particulary with spring as i find the open sourceness attracts an interesting and friendly user base; I put quite some effort into encouraging and helping new players, particularly in xta which is a relatively marginalised mod.
I only write all this BS because i feel my reputation has been attacked and i would like to try and clarify my account of "that fateful game".
I will host the replay of the game if anybody gives a sh*t, and for the record, anybody ever playing with me wants a handicap, just ask- I assumed AF didnt need one as he has been playing spring, and star ranked, a lot longer than i have.

HEY HEY HEY can u guys kill the e-penis pissing contest for one damn second
sheesh....
pintle isn't this kind of pointless. since all you are really doing is swtiching who gets the handicap (really need to change that name, btw)??? i think this would just cause more problems since you would effectively be cutting out the legs from underneath someone. having it as a boost makes more sense not to mention it helps with tweaking AI difficulty.

back on topic, sorry if i over reacted/e drama'd/flamed.
With maximum handicap on a fairly new player, they often still stall or spend the extra resources badly. Throttling the growth of a more experienced player might be a more effective way of helping the newer player.
I'm not proposing we get rid of positive handicaps, i just thought it would probably be easy to implement, and know at least i would find it useful.
No excuses for being a bit of a tit in my previous post, sorry guys.

Id agree, it'd be more effective negatively handicapping the more experienced player, as pintle said, most new players cant even spend the extra resources they get, especially when they're being harrased and raided constantly.
Im thinking itd probably be best to let new players get better and develop strategies based on a normal un-handicapped start, rather than them having exess resources all the time.
I know thats the way id want to learn anyway.
Most new players dont even know what it means too, Ive had some guys shout at me for giving them handicaps,
"Hey! its not good enough that your entire clan and its 100 hour stars are all on one team, you want to handicap us too? screw this, see ya losers!"
At least if you could negatively handicap a star player, the term "handicap" may make a bit more sense ^^
To keep everyone happy, and to avoid confusion over the term "handicap" there should be a slider or whatever for 1- 100 bonus and 1-100 handicap that the host can use to give to any player of his/her choice.
wow that was long, I was gonna stop after the first paragraph ^^

Why, as AF pointed out to me, should we make it 2 sliders when we only need 1. Simply make the current one scale not from 0 to 100, but from -100 to 100BigSteve wrote:Id agree, it'd be more effective negatively handicapping the more experienced player, as pintle said, most new players cant even spend the extra resources they get, especially when they're being harrased and raided constantly.

Yes. AF sent me a replay of when he was testing NTAI using handicaps. NTAI gets a 300% handicap boost, and was building and reclaming 3 times faster than AF's commander...Lindir The Green wrote:-100 could allow for fun games where everyone starts out with fixed resources and can't get any more.
But does handicap affect build speed too?
