I also used metal all over the place and large metal extraction radius on my Azure Rampart map.
I think I'll try this myself... but it would be cool if you had a kind of general (like 5 red) greeness all over the map, occational patches of 100 red around the place, and then spots of 255 red that would be blooms on the surface... not "metal patches" like in OTA, but like big veins or bursts... that kind of think... I think that would work well... fit in with the way everyone plays...you'd have something visible to fight about... you could use the metal map showy bit to find medium patches, and you could just build a mex farm if you wanted a compact base... see, now you've got me wanting to make a map again...

Hmmm, it might be interesting to make a map with the metal as a seam rather than concentrated on a single spot. Then players could slowly advance up the seams. The map maker could directly dictate the route of expansion for players, and create all sorts of issues as seams diverge, and richer seams follow more dangerous routes.
