Thats way too ridiculous. (Are you overwhelmed with concern that cup is going to ban people from the new osrts forum?) As far as ip addresses being private, well thats a bit funny. Anyone who knows how the lobby protocol works knows that it goes to zero lengths to hide people's ip addresses. Should it? Well thats another question...PauloMorfeo wrote: And i bless the gods of the Internet the fact that the lobby server never changed to iamacup's site or i bet he would have already started deleting accounts for beeing smurfers, for winning him in game or whatever might have annoied him.

i didnt make this to get smurfs i wrote it as a test program lol. and i dont care about smurfs at all its a joke program.
You WIN THE INTERENT, well done. private my ass.
ever read you email? logged on to TASC? gone to google.com? used bit torrent? looked at this site? if you havent then your ip is private. if you have then im afraid its common knowledge
and to put things in perspective, unknown files has only ever had 2 bans and they have not been permanent. (fuzion monkey was one which was more of a joke than a serious ban)

Logging onto any given website gives the owner of that website access to your IP, however, that doesn't mean that anyone on the internet can obtain another's IP effortlessly. To find a random person's IP here would take some doing if you're not a forum/website/client moderator or administrator.
I don't see smurfing as a valid method of concealing your identity. But I also see distributing lists of our user's IP's publicly is ethically questionable, as by logging onto our site and our client they are placing some degree of trust in us that we are keeping that information exclusive to us. I have access to every member on these forums email addresses, but you'll never see me give that information to anyone. I think ideally we'd have some sort of anonymous but unmodifiable identifier used by lobby, like the steam ID system, so we can allow people to record and monitor the lobby relative identity of other users without questionably distributing information like IP addresses freely.

Uh, yeah. If I were a moderator, I would not be entirely comfortable with that list of IP addresses being publically available in plain text to anyone.
Also, I see nothing wrong with smurfing...
Finally, SwiftSpear, you may be a minority among clanners - most clanners I see are very good players, and want to be on a team with their other clan members vs. random lobby riffraff. They're in a clan because they want to play together on a team with their clanmates, which is fine, but which most likely means that the teams end up being severely unbalanced.
I see clan-unbalanced teams fine, as long as the clan is hosting its own server... clanners shouldn't stomp into someone else's server and then demand to all be on the same team... not that I have found this to be an issue at the present time, but it could become one as Spring expands.

you`re the mod, aren`t you? might as well remove it...SwiftSpear wrote: But I also see distributing lists of our user's IP's publicly is ethically questionable, as by logging onto our site and our client they are placing some degree of trust in us that we are keeping that information exclusive to us.

Personally Id have stopped playing spring a long time ago if I didnt join a clan.
I didnt join to play stacked games against lobby randoms, or to improve my game ( I used replays of SJ, Heze and Day for that)
I joined simply because its way more fun to play with a few people you know, especially when you all have a mic, Ive had loads of "ROFL" moments on ts way back when me Dave, Drex Deci and FA used to play aa together on Friday nights, or more recently with other xhc guys, Rd, Mahcio and Diggz.
I mean... Cabbages habit of rotating factories to put units out in the opposite direction to the way hes playing just cracks me up. ^^
Clans seem to be both good and bad, seeing a game full of clan members for lobby randoms would kinda put some people off playing the game, on the flip side, they seem to help keep the core of the spring gaming community together, plus they give newer players a good chance to test their skills, improve their game, get a good replay of economy building and maybe take the scalp of a well know oober player in the community, which was always an incentive for me as I was learning the game.
Woah, what a rambler im turning out to be, I just realised the original topic of this thread was about smurfs... oops.

My decrease in playing can definately be linked to that.BigSteve wrote:I joined simply because its way more fun to play with a few people you know, especially when you all have a mic, Ive had loads of "ROFL" moments on ts way back when me Dave, Drex Deci and FA used to play aa together on Friday nights, or more recently with other xhc guys, Rd, Mahcio and Diggz.

lol. I dont think ip addresses are private, but I wouldn't just list a buttload of peoples ip's on the interwebs.iamacup wrote:lol shift + ctrl + F6 = everyone logged on's ip.
