New map - Victoria Crater

Post by Goolash_ »

Victoria Crater:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_crater

This map is modeled after the Victoria Crtaer on mars, it is best suited for 4v4 and should be played left vs right (because up vs down is unbalanced). this map is 12x12.
Only bots can climb up and down from the crater, vehicles can not climb it but they can move freely inside it. Each side has 4 start postions and there's a metal concetration in the middle of the crater and some metal outside the crater (up and down) exactly placed between the 2 sides. There are eight places in which bots can get in and out of the crater located symetricly (more or less) around the crater's edge.

(9.16 MB)

Thank you Zydox for playtesting and making his bot available for me to abuse... :-)
Thank you Forboding Angel for the best tutorial on mapmaking ever.

I really like the texture. You should add some rocks or something to spice it up a bit, its looking rather barren. Actually, i think a couple of old dead leafless trees around the outside would look sweet. something like this:

bamb- size added above.
Sheekel - it's suppose to look barren - it's mars :-) , but on a more serious note i didnt want to add trees and all the rocks i could find were not very suitable for the map (and i cant model even if you hold a gun to my head) so if you can hook me up with stones with a texture that matches to ground i'll be happy to add them.

BTW: this tree model is really cool, did you make it? can you post the model so i can use it for future maps?

my only complaint is that the texture is pretty low res :( <might just be springs mipmapping, tends to make crap blurry. I'mma dl and see for myself ;p

it is pretty nice tho, and a neat concept to be sure :)

Edit:

It is pretty, but very low res. The detail tex covers a lot of that up, so no big worries. It looks really cool, I just wish the photo could have been higher res :(

Very cool map tho, I do plan on having a game on it quite soon.

rattle - You just answered David Bowie's question. :P

Sheekel - You damn tease, and i thought i was going to get me a model... :?

Forboding Angel - I used a 4000X5000 jpg found here (upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cc/PIA08813.jpg), was there a way for me to make it more high res? or is it all dpended on the size of the picture?
Thanks for the resposnse (as well the map tutorial), being the master guru of maps - do you have any rock modles that would fit this map? i chose not to put metal textures on purpose thinking it would spoil the the landscape - any feedback on that?
any other advice concerning gameplay or anything else you can think about...

I actually don't model features. Lathan Stanley is the one that works with me on map features. Here is a link to almost all of the features he ahas created for spring. http://www.unknown-files.net/index.php? ... &dlid=1557

That image is only for the most part being stretched double. That's not too bad, especially for a photorealistic terrain. Honestly I wouldn't worry about it. It truly is very neat, and I have to say that looking at it, I like it more and more. Plus the cool gameplay options (either top or middle) I like a whole heck of a lot.

As far as metal patch textures... I imagine that most players will appreciate them, but it's not too huge of a deal and, tbh, it's your call. I probably would add them, but as I said, it doesn't make or break the map either way.

All in all I really like it. Very good job dude!

Looking good, and dont worry about metal, I never used to put it on and everyone comp... wait, yes everyone was fine about it. :-)

Very good use of that photo, and your heigh map realy lines up well!

You could try Lethithan Stanlys rocks (butched his name there), if you took the textures for them in to photoshop you could easily adjust the hue and saturation to the colour you want them to be.

If this is supposed to be on mars, why is the sky blue (and full of clouds)?...

Not everyone plays in top down view, I always see the sky when I play. Not that i really care if its blue, but please dont ignore things like sky colour.

Speaking of trees contact aGorm. He made one for his newest map (thread in this forum) and I'm sure he can strip it from it's leaves and/or put a different skin on it.

Someone who can make skyboxes could make a good skybox from the mars rover panoramas from marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov, there are some really good shots there, just hard to find... One with sunset was great.

Actually, the sky on mars IS blue, people assume its pink because of the NASA photos, but they dont realize the NASA photos have pink skies because they're optimized for that particular part of the spectrum due to lower lighting levels, other NASA photos indeed show a pale blue sky.

3 raw images are taken through the red (L4), green (L5) and blue (L6) filter with the Rover Panoramic Camera.
The red and green images are combined (each pixel value summarized) with weighting 70/30; the same is done with blue and green.
The results from step 2 are combined into one color image.

You'd have to know, among other things, the exposure times for the different filters to know the real color, it's not so straightforward... But I don't think Mars has a completely blue sky. It has blue around the sun though. It was a somewhat controversial issue the last time I looked. Maybe you're right.
