My annual Deus Ex topic
If you haven't played this game, buy it. It is in my opinion the best first-person shooter ever made. The graphics are dated, the animation is shoddy. (well, I guess even HL2 has you running when you go up ladders)
But, it's still the very best FPS ever. It's actually a hybrid of FPS and RPG, since as you advance in the game you're allowed to make choices about which of your skills should be improved. Some people play through the whole game without increasing any of their skills. Some play with only melee attacks. Some play with the objective of NEVER being detected by any enemy, ever. Some play without ever using weapons. it's actually possible to play the entire game without firing a single shot. Some people play without ever killing anyone.
Deus Ex is the very pinnacle of developer innovation and creativity. I have beaten it at least 20 times, and I still feel the urge to continue playing it, pushing the limits of my skill. I still find new things in the game. This is the only FPS I've ever found enjoyment on playing at the highest difficulty setting. It doesn't get easier or harder, it just gets more and more intersting. I want to find a mod to make the game harder, just because it'll be an even more intense experience.
I could write about it forever, but the short form is, this is the best game I have ever played. You never want it to end. No game comes anywhere close in terms of realism. A single solid hit will kill you. If you're shot in the leg, you slow down. If both legs are shot, you can only crawl. If your arms are hit, your aim gets dramatically worse. You have 600 hitpoints, but only 100 for each section of your body.
The story is the best I have ever experienced. There's nothing contrived, no sense of needing to suspend your disbelief, it's all happening in front of you, and your actions are felt later in the game. Kill a character, and you'll hear about it from another one. Speak to one individual, and you'll have more lines when you speak to his superior. Become a walking tank or an invisible, undetectable assassin. Become unstoppable with nothing more than a pocket knife. Hack ATMs to get money to buy supplies. Increase your environmental resistance to be able to throw gas grenades in front of you, rendering everyone unable to fight but yourself unaffected. Choose your inventory well, because there's a limit to how much you can carry. Do you want a rocket launcher, or a sniper rifle and an assortment of grenades? Should you buy the upgrade for your assault rifle's clip size, or buy the recoil supressor for your sniper rifle? Will you make a silent approach through the back door, or simply blast the front doors off? Or maybe you'll use your newly-upgraded jumping skill to just reach the roof in a single bound.
This game is not only flawless, it is unsurpassed by any other game.

I cant disagree, dues ex is definately my fav alltime shooter, great conspiarcy storyline, augmented humans, secret technology and buddy called Tracer Tong ^^ what more could you want?
Its such a shame they sold out on the sequel and made a console friendly pile of shite.
In fact, Im gonna go reinstall dues ex and play it. Again. hehe

Every aspect of it is very good (plus the fact that it runs on integrated), EXCEPT the AI.
Enemy AI is absolutely HIDEOUS...especially when it comes to searching for you. They either have the attention span of a three year old on methamphetamines, or they have an absolutely uncanny ability to seek you across the level...

Uh, Rattle... there are three different ways to end the last level, and you couldn't find ANY of them??

Yeah, it's unfortunate the AI was so weak. But I guess it wasn't such a bad thing... after all, once you've eluded them, whether by hiding in shows or outrunning them, sitting there for 6 hours until they realistically call off the alert wouldn't be any fun.
I wish I could try system shock 2 but I actually can't get it to run properly on XP. I normally have no problem running things, but for some reason, SS2 just won't go. Once I got it to run (on an old setup) but my computer was still so bloody fast that zombies would constantly reappear literally half a second after I kill them. This is like 5 minutes into the game... all I've got to work with is a bloody (pun) lead pipe, trying to figure out how to get past this stupid turret, and there's 50 zombies swarming me!

I beat Deus Ex but had to consult a walkthrough I guess I'm just bad.Caydr wrote:Uh, Rattle... there are three different ways to end the last level, and you couldn't find ANY of them??![]()

And SS2 doesn't even run with 95 or 98 emulation?
Just noticed this with another old game (Revenant) which either ran super fast or super slow with limited FPS (on Win2k) but pretty fine with 98 emulation on. Apparently the sleep times are handled different or something.

I agree, deus ex is the best RPG/FPS hybrid ever.
The main char. is too cool :p.
But really, I love the way your actions affect the game dramatically.
The game's very open, just not-too-open in some spots.
*cough*
SPOILER
*cough*
You know when you face off gunther outside the subway?
I actually managed to kill everyone, destroy every mech - only to find out that gunther himself is invincible.
I was quite pissed

*SPOILER ALERT*
Yeah Fox, I did the same thing... it annoyed me to no end
. But then again, the creators probably didn't think it was possible to do that.
In fact, I went back to my saved game just before I killed everything except Gunther and just surrendered peacefully, so I didn't waste any ammo or grenades.

*= That includes games that pretend they allow you to take any approach but make you so weak that you are dead if you try to take enemies head on.
Please tell me you aren't talking about Deus Ex, because if so, you, uh, suck at FPS games.
What's the point in sneaking past the enemies if you can tear them apart in the most horrible manner... isn't that why we play first person shooter?
At least I do. Well I play almost every game like that... mmm that reminds me of gutting little children with the Ripper (chainsaw knife), melting them with plasma weapons, exploding them by smuggling dynamite in their inventory or overdosing them with drugs... too bad this isn't about Fallout 2
