Ideally, the Unknown-Files people would specify the tags their software supported, and ask what tags users were interested in being able to find maps by.

As for why we might want the SMD be different for different PCs, as I said:

1) Allows the creator to update the tags on the map without releasing a new version that everyone has to download.

2) Allow users to specify their own metadata using the same mechanism that map creators do, so metadata from two different sources doesn't need to be merged when loading a map or map list.

Ill state this again, this thread is for discussing not jsut WHAT is included, but HOW as well. So if you dissagree with the format/syntax, say so. This is where we can discuss it before its implemented so we dont have to change it later. So Caydr, say your suggestions, no matter how trivial. Egarwaen, how would you make the list more machine readable? How should the mods be represented? By acronym, or full name? Version number or not? what will the map type tag be named?

Keep discussing, going good so far

For the machine-readable stuff, it depends on what you want to use it for. Possible uses:

1) Provide links on Unknown-Files to mods that a map works well for.

2) Provide a list of mods in the client that a mod works well for.

I think that trying to link maps to specific mod versions is probably pointless. There's almost never a reason to play an older version of a mod. On the other hand, this might be good for tagging maps that don't work on newer/older versions.

I think that's going to need a new mod tag. Probably for a unique name, which U-F then parses.

Of course, it'd be nice if we had some kind of URL/URI that could be used to resolve the mod on U-F or on the user's computer.
