Once the linux version is working for multiplayer (after this next release), it seems like the next step (besides waiting for the windows devs to use mingw so we can play linux vs windows) is to start packaging up for various distributions. Are there any plans to make a .deb for Debian / Ubuntu? If we can get spring into the debian unstable respository, millions of linux users will be able to install it almost effortlessly within 6 months or so (the length of the Ubuntu versioning cycle). .rpms and whatever gentoo uses are also important, to pick up the other 40% of the linux desktop install base. This should make Spring much more popular, which will attract more developers, which will make Spring much better, which will make Spring more popular, etc...

Currently working on a source rpm atm...
But been really busy with RL.
And will get back to coding UnityLobby & rpm over weekend.

But HAARP is right, ideally we a free content mod i.e one that is not based of CaveDog Content. So people can install spring without legally requiring own TA.

About getting packages into distros
1) Need Free-Content mod to avoid Cavedog Content. Linux Distros avoid IP issues for good reason

2)It is also hard to sync Releases with various Distro's Release Timetables & get latest release in all the distros. i.e if player has an old version of game wont be able to play online really. Although Gentoo really doesnt have a timetable, so getting ebuild into offical branch should be hard once point 1 == sorted.

4) More than likely we have to maintain the rpms / debs / ebuilds in a proper 3rd party repo so more user friendly.

Sounds like a good idea; but i would have a wiki page or something for each distro describing the installation to make it easy a good example of this is on winehq.org http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb

Spring 0.73 will have a -free data tarball available already (containing NanoBlobs).

I'll also make a -nonfree data tarball for support for OTA mods.

E: and yeah, what hollowsoul said. We can't put spring in distros package management systems because it would be impossible to sync our release cycle with the release cycle of multiple linux distro's. So we need to maintain our own repositories.

this is his website, there you find more info, the repo's are for ubuntu and debian.

But he hasnt posted for quite a while so i think he is no longer taking care of them.
