Texture Competition 0002 - Cameo Texture

Post by Neddie »

We have a need for GPL-compliant textures and this seemed like a good way to call for new ones.

Just open up an art program and make a texture of something with a cameo theme, any terrain basis allowed. Sizes from 128x128 to 512x512. Post the texture here, for the evaluation of your peers.

This is the second Texture Competition, and we encourage artists to have their submissions in by next Friday.

For great justice, good luck!

Er, that's "camo", not "cameo", lol. "Cameo" is a bit part on a movie ;)

How do you know I didn't want a cameo texture image? The Berkeley shadow of Hendrix would make a great stone texture. Indeed, however, a cameo is not what I wanted - though it was the side joke I posed. If only I could give Argh cookies. I assumed that given the serious spelling and syntax issues common in this forum, it wouldn't be easy for anybody to catch it.

If you haven't noticed, general audience, I've been playing little word games here and there to improve the time.

Back to the actual thread. Yes, it is a camo texture contest - with a little side contest hidden in the wording. Camouflage! Any terrain or setting! I fully expect forest, plains, tundra and desert to crop up!

This was an interesting one for me since I've never had to create a camo texture before.I know its not jungle camo, just pretend its for a lunar landscape :D Its not very good but its a ten minute quickie seamless tile.
( Example of it doing the seamless dance: http://fileuniverse.com/images/seamless.jpg )

First attempt

Following suggestions, same pattern base, smaller, bit of blend in the black and white and new colours because that's easy.

X.x... Take a more subtle attempt.. I think it would be better if it blended more.. The black sticks out too much

Edit: Try taking all the black and white out, I wonder if it would look better...

I would like to see these at 128 or so, just like the metal. Personally, I'm liking all of the serious entries thus far :-)

But by making them bigger they can be hnk... hence I started att he upper limit. I actully have them as 1024 x 1024... but I shrank them for the site.

*impales Picasso on a spike and returns the chest*

Something of note though, is that camos generally don't look too great on units, here's an example of my complete and utter failure to produce anything decent:
