Allowing more than 10 unit-groups?

Post by jensgb »

Is there currently any way of creating more unit groups than the standard TA Ctrl+0 - Ctrl+9 ?

If not, any suggestions as to which aditional keys could be used (F1-F12, etc.)

I almost always when I play, wish that I could make more than 10 unit-groups.

Using the side menu it's possible to select usergroups made by Group AI dll's that have numbers such as 11 or 12

How is this done? (it is not entirely intuitive...)

In the side menu if the selected unti is in a group then a few extra menu entries appear such as clear group/select group etc

Yes, I have noticed the entries, but the use of them eludes me (not for lack of trying).

How are the menu-entries used?

Well if you select a unit in group 7 and click on select group then group 7 as a whole is selected. If you click clear group thent hat unit that's selected then no longer belongs to a group

ctrl-Q. You know, there is a readme. Try looking at it before creating a pointless topic.

I disagree on the topic being pointless, be polite.

I am aware that Ctrl+Q generates a group with group-number being the lowest vacant number larger than 9.

However to get a hold of the thus numbered group, one has to have one or more of said group ALREADY SELECTED and the press 'Q'. This can be very inconvenient for anyone who wants to use advanced strategies including more than 10 different unit-groups. (Since you have to MANUALLY locate the units you want - this kind of defeats the Hotkey-concept)

What I want to know: Is there any other way of getting a hold on unit-groups with numbers above 9 than the above mentioned?

If not, I plan to open the discussion on how to implement a way to go about adding and selecting unit-groups numbered above 9.

Currently, no. If the Q key were to cycle the unnamed groups instead of what it does now, would that be good for you?

If it did that, AND automatically tracked the group cycled to (since you will feel less sure about which automatically assigned group-number belong to which groups) it would be better than at present.

Even better, holding down 'Alt' while typing a multidigit group number to retrieve the group would make you able to jump to the desired group immediately, rather than having to cycle your way to it.

Even better again would be holding Ctrl + Alt down to assign multidigit group numbers allowing you to assign group-numbers above 9 yourself.

Could a portion of the keyboard be set aside (say all the letters right of the RFC line) for groups with letter for their names instead of numbers, and all the hotkeys currently in that side of the board moved to the QWERASDFZXC keys? (as well as keeping the present number system)? that would give 15 extra groups and if it was done soonish then it wouldn't affect people too much who were used to the old keys (since the 'old keys' would have been around for less than a month).
