Discuss game development here, from a distinct game project to an accessible third-party mutator, down to the interaction and design of individual units if you like.

A curious idea

Post by BlackLiger »

Has anyone played the old Battlezone game by Activision, which was based on the older arcade game?

That was actually an interesting game, and I was wondering how hard it would be to make a mod for Spring based off it.

This is not an actual mod post, just a discussion of ideas. Someone else may make the mod, its just curiosity that makes me wonder if it can be done...

That was the one where it was like an RTS but you could pilot all the units.

Like BF2 crossed with C&C Renegade?

Imagine Battlefield 2, but (a) less focus on infantry, and (b) it was a full on RTS (with resources, construction, etc) entirely commanded by a single player-unit.

Was very good. BZ2 had more polish, but lost some of the good gamplay concepts of the original.

The RTS gameplay was halfway between C&C and TA. Harvesting was like C&C but with super-cheap harvesters, but TA like in that dead units left wreckage that you'd fight over. Initially all buildings were just big mobile factories built at the main factory (the recycler) but later you'd upgrade to the "construction vehicle" that could build static defenses, resupply depots, etc.

I too still have the cd. It was a great game. for spring I think that it could work well as a mod.

What Spring would need for that is force the player to stay in FPS mode for the commander and allow issuing orders in FPS mode. That's pretty much all that's needed, at least until you try to add changing vehicles.

Oh and Rave Gun FTW.

meh. Even BZ1 had the tactical map view. All you'd really need is for it to be FORCED to commander death = game ends...

Theres also SOO many structures they left unfinished in BZ1...

Empires (source mod)? that's pretty much a combined RTS/FPS where the commmander controls the placing and purachsing of most stuffbut the gruns are required to do the legwork. engineers build, riflemen fight etc etc

Empires wasn't the first mod of that kind but BZ had a much more fleshed out RTS part.

yah. Anyone want to have a go at making a BZ1/BZ2 mod for spring (Not the FPS mode, although that WOULD be cool, but the buildings n such for it. We've already GOT thermal vents for the mobile builders if we can get those working, and if we can't, we do a BZ2....)
