Some good values for new laser system

Post by Caydr »

Since AA will not be released for another two weeks by community decision, I will release these now instead.

These are some good values I've found to simulate OTA lasers, only, of course, prettier :wink:

LLT

beamlaser=1;
thickness=1.25;
corethickness=0.65;
laserflaresize=10;
targetMoveError=0.1;
beamtime=0.12;
rgbcolor=1 0.2 0.2;
tolerance=10000;
explosiongenerator=custom:FLASH1red;

heavy laser tower

beamlaser=1;
thickness=1.5;
corethickness=0.75;
laserflaresize=10;
targetMoveError=0.2;
beamtime=0.15;
rgbcolor=0.2 1 0.2;
tolerance=10000;
explosiongenerator=custom:FLASH1green;

weak yellow laser

beamlaser=1;
thickness=0.75;
corethickness=0.4;
laserflaresize=5;
targetMoveError=0.2;
beamtime=0.1;
rgbcolor=1 1 0.4;
tolerance=10000;
explosiongenerator=custom:FLASH1yellow;

battleship

beamlaser=1;
thickness=2;
corethickness=0.9;
laserflaresize=15;
targetMoveError=0.2;
beamtime=0.2;
rgbcolor=0.2 1 0.2;
tolerance=10000;
explosiongenerator=custom:FLASH1green;

[FLASH1red]
{
usedefaultexplosions=0;
[groundflash]
{
flashSize = 9;
flashAlpha = 0.9;
circleGrowth = 1;
circleAlpha = 1;
ttl = 3;
color = 1,0.8,0.7;

}
}
[FLASH1green]
{
usedefaultexplosions=0;
[groundflash]
{
flashSize = 11;
flashAlpha = 1.1;
circleGrowth = 1;
circleAlpha = 1;
ttl = 3;
color = 0.7,1,0.7;

}
}
[FLASH1blue]
{
usedefaultexplosions=0;
[groundflash]
{
flashSize = 7;
flashAlpha = 1.3;
circleGrowth = 1;
circleAlpha = 1;
ttl = 3;
color = 0.7,0.7,1;

}
}
[FLASH1yellow]
{
usedefaultexplosions=0;
[groundflash]
{
flashSize = 7;
flashAlpha = 1.3;
circleGrowth = 1;
circleAlpha = 1;
ttl = 3;
color = 1,1,0.6;

}

Your result will look something like this:

What does targetMoveError mean?

Very nice! :D

However, i'd suggest making the corethickness be set even smaller, so the beam looks more red/whatever than white. :-)

I was going for a sort of lighsaber thing, where the core is such intense energy it's just white. You can definitely see the color a lot more when you're zoomed out.

Sorry for leaving in those erroneous tags, they're not anything to do with the lasers. What I posted was just my own notes. Tolerance and TargetMoveError can be ignored.

Speaking of lightsabers, it would be nice to be able to jerry rig these laser effects for that use... *nudges a dev*

Bah, what use would that be? :P

Here's some more accurate pics of what the above will give you ingame: http://s101.photobucket.com/albums/m73/caydr/

I agree, the white core is nice as opposed to a completely coloured beam, but the Ep 1-3 sabers have wider coloured "halos", which look cooler than the old ones that have bigger cores:

And real lasers have a more subtle but similarly large "halo":

I've taken alot of trouble to make nice laser FX in photoshop, and this is the nicest effects imho. :-)

I hate and despise EVERYTHING about Episode One from the light sabers to the acting, so I'd prefer the original series. Also the originals looked cooler, in my opinion. Or at least how they fought with them looked cooler. Whatever.

I definatley agree that the core should be made smaller and the color on the outside made larger and more transparent.

@Zoombie :shock:

Such..... anger, you have. Beware the Dark Side, you must. :P

But seriously, I mentioned it cause they just happen to make their FX follow real lasers like in the second pic.

I prefer the new sabers, and hate all the other new stuff.

And real lasers have a more subtle but similarly large "halo":
That laser isnt the laser at all, thats the lasing medium generating the laser. The beam itself is invisible, as you can see the point at the end.

No, the laser generator thign is at the rright of the pic, the black cylinder witht he yellow warnignlabel somewhere.

the glass is filled with some gas wich the laser is either making into plasma or it just makes the laser more visible.

And the halo is again caused partially by the gas and partially by the glass.

I know that very well, but we're not here to argue over technicalities.

What we are talking about the desired in-game effect, and I took this example to illustrate my point.

Hmmm, this is going to be so badass....

IF I wanted to I could DL the svn right now, but my mod is like 1/200 complete, maybe less than that... I don't have time for play...

Grab the SVN version anyway, that way you can use all the advanced toys now instead of having to redo things that can/have to be done differently in the next version.
