We've recently been re-invaded by certain people, who should know better, and just stay in their cages where they're happy. I thought we'd already seen the last of this, but I guess that it's just like allergies- the seasons change, and back they come.
I think they should go back to TAU, where they belong, and stay in that llama-land of self-perpetuating fanboy behavior.
Yes, I mean you. You know exactly who you are. You, fool!
Why am I ranting? Well, because you're fools, I'm going to have to spell this out, s.l.o.w.l.y.:
1. You're under the illusion that Spring should be OTA. This is an illusion. I wish I had a way to wake up your foolish brains, and let some sunshine into them... then you might understand why those of us who're here... are here.
Spring is Something Else. It's never going to be exactly like OTA, because OTA was flawed, and the flaws can't all be fixed, without it ceasing to be OTA.
Every revision, it becomes less and less like OTA, and more like something I'd actually want to play.
2. OTA is dead. You guys are the last hangers-on of a cultlike fanboy phenomenon. We don't owe you anything, including respect, because you have an Original Copy of OTA from 1997. The hilarious aspect of this, at least for me, is that I am one of the few who owns a copy of OTA that old- most of you started playing it much later than me.
I have played enough RTS games that I know that OTA was not the "greatest RTS ever made". In fact, I'd vote for several before I'd vote for OTA... including... brace yourselves, fools... Starcraft. Yes, Starcraft. Because, while you fools stayed in your little world... the world where nothing ever changed, because Cavedog died and quit patching the game engine... Blizzard fixed its flaws, and made it one of the finest games ever made. But you didn't notice, did you, fools? Naw, you just stayed in your Gnug little caves, and *Cr@ft became a dirty word! Oh, how daring... not. You guys are like late-thirtysomethings who still think Prince is daring. It's sad, but it's just the truth. Just like rock and roll... game design has come a LONG way since 1997. Get over it.
3. Spring should not be developed as you direct. Period. Your requests are invariably focused on getting things to work the way you expect from OTA, not in a way that leads to better future games.
The least annoying of you merely presses his cases among us, patiently for months, understanding that we're not going to take his arguments at face value, and sometimes he wins on logic, persuasion, and generally putting forward a good point. I can totally respect that. Heck, I can even get on board with that, and support that, by demonstrating, in my demo mod, how new and old gameplay can be combined for maximum fun

Moreover... I think I speak for the majority of actual modders here (as opposed to mere dabblers and kibbitzers, who outnumber us by far in words but lie deep beneath the shadows of our actual achievements) when I say that most of the features I want... aren't in OTA.
I found them in other great RTS games, such as Kohan II, AOE, Starcraft, Metal Fatigue (which wasn't great, but sure was interesting), Homeworld II, etc., etc., etc. Or they're things that aren't in any existing commercial game... but should be. But you fools want to complain about how we have a Request Forum, but "none of it ever gets done".
Well, you FOOLS... if you read the SVN, the actual, factual tabulation of what is ACTUALLY GETTING DONE, you will find... that quite a few requests... including a fair chunk of mine... have GOTTEN DONE, or are GETTING DONE. The next version of Spring is going to kick so much Ass, they'll have to rename it the "Chuck Norris edition"! You guys are FOOLS. Ignorant, raving, trolling FOOLS. The Request Forum just gives us a place to talk to the developers in public... it doesn't garantee we get what we want.
If you go look, though, you will consistantly see that those of us who argue effectively (and, I might add, constructively and respectfully, which does not mean kissing the dev's butts, but simply treating them like the smart, hard-working adults they are) ... get what we ask for. Sometimes it takes a few months, is all. Which, all things considered, is pretty good, for a freewheeling circus of developers who are all over the world and have a lot've different strengths and weaknesses. They could just ignore us, and build Spring purely for their own specific gameplay. That they aren't is why people like me, with years of experience working with different game engines... are here. Not because I loved OTA. But because I can see, in Spring, a great and powerful thing, for all gamers and game designers alike!
4. Having the Spring developers spend all of their time recreating OTA for you, or just "hunt the bugs" because your ideal is for things to STOP ASAP before (gasp) Spring is so obviously NOT OTA that nobody but a fool confuses it with OTA... is the mark of a fool.
It's not that Spring doesn't have a lot've bugs. I'm a mod developer- I know most of them better than you do, thanks, except for the game exploits which are specific to OTA mods... which, because I'm not designing around OTA's gameplay, I can get around or ignore... I, and everybody else who's familiar with the current development process, is aware that Spring is not perfect. Y'know what, though? It's already far better than OTA in most of the ways that matter.
And I think this is, and remains, why you're here, stirring up trouble. You're afraid. AFRAID. We're finally going to leave you without any newbies to pummel with sparking, nuke flooding, com-hiding, or any of that other cool stuff that OTA had in it. We're going to have a game engine that can <omg, gasp> actually have significantly different game designs, and AIs that can play them. Oh, wait... we already have that

But no... you fools arrive here, and say nonsense like "AA sucks"... which is so, so revealing.
And you constantly complain about the graphical wizardry, even though it's OPTIONAL. Oh noes... Spring, which is NOT OTA, is much more advanced in terms of its graphics! Oh noes... it actually puts out top-end graphics that will, with good mods and a few more steps, actually put it on a par with the most advanced stuff from the commercial drivel-dealers! OMG! That's heresy! STOP IT NOW!
<sighs>
No... what it is... is that it's a signal that you need to UPGRADE YOUR HARDWARE. When I read about people trying to get Spring to run with GeForce IIs, I want to cry. You people... go to Tiger Direct, right now... and spend $400 to get a bargain-basement upgrade to something reasonably close to modern!
What we have here, fools... is a massive case of game-engine envy. It's worse than penis envy, because you know in your little cold hearts that if you had a tenth of the raw skill going into Spring mods, you'd be here, with the future, instead of hanging on to the past by the skin of your teeth.
"Oh, but we haz skillz". No, you don't. The only real talented people from your community are all here, in the future, not in your past. You people don't even remember me, because I recognized what was going on, and moved to a happier playground, where my skills would actually be recognized, but I was in your ugly place once. I left. And so did anybody with REAL SKILL. I'm sorry, but master buildpic-designers... are llamas. People who can only make 3DOs? Llamas! People who can't make their own tilesets? LLAMAS. People who just want OTA, but "better"?
LLAMAS. Go away.
Or get over it. We're never, ever, EVER going to help you re-create a game we've already played, all right? If you want it, build it yourselves... oh, wait... you can't...
You come here, with your foolish statements and raw hate. It's sad... it's lame... and it's not going to stop us from finally burying OTA, and leaving it in the dusty grave where it belongs, with all of the text-adventure MUDS, graphical "adventure games", and other ancient crap!
Period.
And no amount of flaming will even slightly change the outcome.
