Dark Messiah of might and magic
Moderator: Moderators
I think you would adore Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. The stats are far less important then how well you swing a sword, use your daggers, fire your bow and use your spells.
Also the combat is VERY...fluid. Like a notch up from fear. You can kick, for one BIG thing. That doesn't sound very big until you do things like:
Kick an enemy into another enemy, knocking them both over.
Kick an enemy into a weakened pillar and sent the pillar (and whatever its supporting) crashing down on the enemy's head.
Kick an enemy's disembodied head (that you just cut off, one would think) into another enemy, tripping them up long enough for you to impale them.
Kick an enemy off the roof.
Kick an enemy into spikes
Kick an enemy into fire and watch the fire-dance
Kick an enemy into an oil drum, then fire a fire arrow into them and THEN watch the fire-dance.
Kick a small crate into an enemy's face and watch him tumble off the roof, onto the floor, into fire, into spikes, into other enemies or into a weakened pillar.
Did I mention this also has the Source Engine behind it. So physics physics and more physics. Also you can charge up an adrenalin meter, and then unleash and INSTA KILL SLOW MO DEATH MOVE OF DEWM! These moved range from decapitations, dismemberment, impalement, throwing a knife into their neck and in general kicking ASS!
Did I also mention the environment is FILLED with traps, barrels, crates, oil drums, ropes, chains and such. All of witch you can use to fight with the enemy. Even BETTER the ENEMY CAN FIGHT WITH THEM TOO! Example: An enemy knocked me onto a platform and hacked a rope that extended over the platform. I had time to spin around and see a massive rock fly into the platform and send me flying into the abyss below the platform. After loading the game I did likewise to the enemy. The sound of his scream as he plummeted to death was VERY satisfying.
magic. Magic is fun. My favored of the three spells in the demo is Freeze. It...well freezes the enemy in a block of ice. But whats fun is freezing them THEN KICKING THEM OFF A CLIF. Then, half way to the bottom, they thaw out and start screaming...before hitting rock bottom.
Bowery is more fun then it appears, thanks to some neat things you can do with it. things like sticking an arrow into fire and then volia! Fire arrows. Used for setting things ablaze. Like enemies, crates, oil drums, other things. Kicking a flaming crate into an enemy and watching the resulting fire-dance NEVER GETS OLD!
I've played this two level demo about...30 odd times. Each time is so much fun I load it up and play it again. Knives, swords, shields, bows, spells. Sure you just have two knives (duel wielded) one sword, one shield one bow and three spells, but the WAYS you can use them in nigh endless. So check out this demo.
If it sound like I'm gushing...its cause I am. THIS GAME IS A MUST for action fans. Also a must for...action fans. Calling it Diablo II in FPS form is an understatement.
Think Oblivion's combat on steroids and everything else about Oblivion cut off. So its not for its depth of character development, or plot. Its for the sheer joy of killing Orks. And how much more do you need then that.
And if you don't like Dark Messhia...
then you suck.

i'm finding it very difficult for some reason. the actual mechanics of the game are very good...but it's making it a little difficult.
perhaps it's the realistic backpedal speed stopping my usual 'run away like a girlie' tactics from being effective!
also, how in the hell are you supposed to see all these spikes, ropes and barrels in the middle of combat? without having been there already, cut every rope you don't have the faintest idea what sort of traps there are lurking about.
being picked up by the throat and tossed across the room by an ork is scary
edit: ok now i've learned where the traps are it's easier. and rebinding kick to middle mouse makes it a zillion times better.
kick kick kick parry kick parry run away kick
edit 2: i forgot, the real reason Zoombie played it through 30 times was becuasehis 1.3 gig demo only lasted a few minutes

Its all right to be split off, SS.
And yeah, I think its going to be better with more stuff to do. I think Demo's are getting shorter. Whats up with that?
Also I never really found it that hard. Its just power attack, kick, parry and so on. You can hold down the parry button, so you know. And if an enemy is about whack you, just move to the side.

yes, wathicng my borther doing it i noticed how scripted everything is.
kicks are only very effective if there is something behind then enemy to be kicked against (like a wall, barrel, trap, edge etc etc.). otherwise they seem to do naff all.
holding down parry makes you invunerable to single enemies in the demo (on normal anyhow). but even the slightest lift off will expose you to damage by attacks, even when the attacks don't strike until your parry is back up. odd to me.
i suppose the reason it was short was to not spoil the plot. the reason it was so large was probably that it was too much of a pain in the arse to remove references to artwork/sounds that weren't actually needed from the demo to bother with. still though you can get through the thing in a few minutes. just seems a shame really. WHERE'S MY MULTIPLAYER DEMO?!

Actually kicks do do stuff. They unbalence the enemy, giving you time to dodge. Also if you hold down parry for too long, then one of the two orks will pick you and throw you. This is bad, see.
and I only parry when I'm close to the enemy. You can dodge and weave pretty good. Or at least I can. And I am also annoyed that its so short.
And where is the god damn multiplayer demo? It sounds like so much fun. I mean Battlefield: Of Might and Magic...

yeah it did that to me the first time i played - i'll be damned if i can trigger it again though. is it only while there are two orks attacking you simultaneously? (we tried holding parry on constantly..making me realise you're invinvible against one melee foeZoombie wrote: if you hold down parry for too long, then one of the two orks will pick you and throw you.

in case anyone is fuming about the demo being so short you can fight the cyclops!
he's not very clever though...i think that's why the demo ends where it does

I really liked the Demo cant wait for the full version to come out.
HOMM: DM kind of picks up where Half Life 2 left us, by making even MORE excellent use of the awesome physics engine.
I just hope that they add ninja-stars or similar throwables to the game, so i can decaptitate the monsters with a lazy turn of my hands.

Bows, plus fire, plus physix = DREAM COME FUCKING TRUE!!!!!
I luv all the above stated stuff, can't frieking wait to try it!
damn 1.4 gig demo, its like, larger than warcraft 3 and all the maps for it...
EDIT: IT BETTER FUCKING STAGGER PEOPLE IN MULTI-PLAYER IF I KICK 'EM DAMNIT!!!1
It eats me alive when in SP you can do something and stagger em, but it won't happen in multi-player, a kick to the nuts would stagger me for sure!
