Nutty, workable unit idea that might help eliminate porcing

Post by Dragon45 »

So its easier to porc because units cant shoot through each other - that doesnt mean porcing is best solution; that just means its easier. Accepted.

However, why not try and make the other aspects of Spring's work for us in terms of physics and transport?

Unit idea: Basically a multi-story, thin tower with pigeonholes that moves and can load units. The key would be that the units could actually fire out while being loaded, and take damage in turn. Since the thing would be scaled vertically, units would not get in each others' way when firing, and thereby allievate the lategame issues.

Think of a smaller-ish version of this on treads/wheels:

This way is more realistic *and* it helps avoid friendly fire issues.

Edit: and for those of you who say that this wouldnt be good because all units would travel at same speed - when you have a large mob of units and you click on the enemy base, arent they all just mashing into each other, slowing each other down, etc etc, anyway? The mob moves as a group in either way, so this wouldnt be changing things. Hell, if speed-changing is properly implemented via script, you could even have a unit that moves at the average speed of its transportees :P

Are you proposing we put our units on shelves, put those shelves on wheels and then madly wheeling them at the enemy, hoping that they can do some damage?

Somehow I wonder what's more realistic, friendly fire or warfare with shelves-on-wheels with tanks stacked in it.

Well, at least the latter is physically possible.

Magic bullets, maybe. That explains it. We can shoot through our own units with magic bullets.

Yes, its low-poly. Yes its photoshopped onto Quanto's map.

Gremlins and random pipes can be added so dont worry about the literal gfx >_>

That is a really nice novel idea and could be utter comedy genius...

Fireing through allies is because of the symbolic nature of RTSs and the fact that we use rough collision spheres... units aren't "really" shooting through eachother, it just looks that way because our collision detection system is too simplistic for the simulation to be any better.

Man'o'war! Load artillery in! Train cannons!
The possibilities are endless. We need transports which store units in relation to the transporter's own origin. :P

If I recall Gundam has a unit which may do this.

Yes this is done in Gundam using the Dodai II transport plane. It can carry one mech on its back and the mech can shoot while riding.

Another example (i think) is the Fat Shrew in Buggi's Unit Overload mod. The Shrew can load six units which can all fire and choose their own target.

Also once we get the new version (whenever that is) Smoth's isfireplatform tag will allow u to do this with no script hacking.

As to the Mobile Death Shelf i say meh

Have any of cynical jerkfaces even bothered to consider the gameplay possibilities?

Take a step further, how about designing own units this way?
The shelves-on-wheels are the chassis, and weapons are loaded as modules which can't move on their own. 8)

We've even seen them in action. Sure, with multiple Dodai II planes, but still... in action. It's worth it.
