I am banned.

Post by kirbyssb »

Hi, I am requesting that I get unbanned from the main TA server.

Sorry for making this a public post, I don't know how to contact the server administrator as it suggests when I try to log in.

Here's how I got banned:

Me (KirbySSB) and two friends (Zicore, izakit) were playing passworded 1v1 games against eachother (taking turns). izakit (who is 12 years of age) was waiting for Zicore to get in the game, as was typing dots in the main lobby. Here's what his messages looked like

<izakit> .. . . .. . . . . . . ... .. . ..
<izakit> . . .. . . . . ...... . .. .. . . ..
<izakit> .. . .. .. .. . .. .. . .. . .

etc.

After about 8 lines, he was kicked by Decimator (rightfully so, it's the main channel). So he rejoined and didn't flood anymore after that, because he realized doing that was bad.

Later that night, Zicore and izakit were in a game, and again while waiting izakit was typing things like 0g0hg0gh0gh0g0hg0 g0hg0h g0hg0h g0h on many lines rapidly -- however this was in our private game, not in the main lobby. All the sudden that computer was IP banned for flooding, and so I thought it was an automatic one hour ban or so. I went to bed. Waking up, I find that all three of the computers on my network have been auto-banned for the same reason.

I think it's a little silly that all three computers get banned because my friend was typing random letters in a private game -- if we really cared we would have kicked him, but instead the server decided to ban all of us.

I know it's bad to flood a channel and that's why it didn't happen in the main one. We won't do it again and we didn't mean any harm as the game was a private one between friends.

Thanks to whoever can resolve this issue.

The reason you get an autoban if you flood beyond a certain extent is because it slows the server down.

It's basically an unintentional DoS (denial of service) attack on the server, which is illegal.

Perhaps he unintentionally morsed something about the mothers of all assembled players?

As far as I can tell the IP you are posting from is not banned.

For future referance, our lobby client server is not a large webserver. It autobans for flooding because in the past we discovered that with no preventative measures in place it was possible for a single user to crash the server by rapidly spamming. We ban by IP, meaning all computers on most home networks are banned if one is banned. This is done because there is no other way we can ban that can't be easily dodged (and even IP bans aren't very difficult to dodge). You can't flood in private games because the server still has to parse all that info so it can still be crashed from private games. Now that you know if you're still banned I'm fine with unbanning you, please message me the IP that you want unbanned, or message me from that IP so I can look it up.

I understand.

Decimator handled it for me.

Autoban can get problematic for dynamic IPs like most people have, automated bans should have a timeout (e.g. valid for 24 hours, most dynamic IPs are reset after that).

of course bans work over IP adresses
however for noobs who ask 'HOW 2 GET ROND BAN PLS' tell them you heard a rumour that resetting your PC 6 times and then unplugging your router twice, then disconnecting all hardware from your PC rebooting and then reconnnecting all hardware cirmuvents the ban and stops the admins from ever banning you again
the look on their face when the client tells them they are banned  after all that timewasting

We tell customers to unplug their cable modems for 48 hours to get a new IP address.

This was talked about in another thread, but it seems we really need a client-sided autokick that reacts before the server-sided dos protection takes place.

Would spare much work from moderators, would teach the newcommers who do not realize flooding in private channels also stresses the server.

Obviously the autokick feature should tell you why you got kicked so you can learn. You cannot expect everyone understands that flooding will stress the server in private channels also.
