Request for a... Feature

Hi, i thought - after the Greatest possible Smoth Community Exit - the G.p.S.C.E. - that maybee a Modbridge would be cool. The (optional) Ability to let diffrent Mods fight each other in a Game, on one Map should be easy to make for the Devs and would allow the Mod-Comunitys to take a look over the border (if they want to win) -
This Bridge could also allow the Modmakers to include Balancechanges (for the Bridgegames) to keep the Gameplay fair. I think it is a Idea worth to Think about, because in that way - every Mod that is worth it - gets played.

Oh, do you smell what i smell.. smoke... smoke.. this Thread is on fire, oh my god... i am burning...... Flames everywhere. Run for your lives. Leave the Comunity before the Ship sinks - ahem..

A crossover mod would be absolutely awesome IMHO. I hope this idea gets implemented. I don't have any programming skills, so hopefully somebody takes up the job!

a mod variant with a custom gamedata.tdf and dependencies on the two mods in question would allow this.

However the way the modder has balanced the mod will show up when you pit two mods against eachother

It's a great concept, but it won't work at the moment, simply because mods are scaled differently.

Ironically enough, Smoth was the one who was pushing for uniform scale because a car is exactly 47.29323487934 elmos long, anything else is wrong!

Of course, it's not just physical scale we're talking about, but scale of unit health, damage dealt, build times, etc.

Imagine if you were playing NanoBlobs against someone who was playing AA, you would totally pwn them because you would be able to build a Wolf rush before the AAer even finished his basic plant.

Felix Id prefer if you didnt make fun of smoth when hes not here to defend himself or his ideas...

This idea could work... but would loose its charm fairly quickly...

That's not true. 1 elmo= 1 gamesquare.

A gamesquare is 8x8 pixels.

According to this a car is 378.34587903472 pixels long. How smoth managed to measure the .34587903472 is beyond me.

"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" what you prefer.

Agreed that it would loose its charm.

A contest of sorts, where everyone who wants to designs a side for a mod within certain limitations and then the sides are pitted against each other, might be interesting, but because modding is somewhat difficult to get into for those who do not have previous experience in the relevant areas, it probably wouldn't draw much participation.

If I leave in a huff after posting a thread insulting everyone here, you may feel free to gently ridicule my ideas too.

I think he means in general, as in we're mor likely todo it regardles sof wetehr you're there or not.

It also pushes you down several notches on how high up your reputation in this forum is and how positively people see you, which influences everythign from how valued your posts are to how willign people are to do thigns for you, and how trustworthy you seem

While it would be cool to do something like this... it'd require severe limitations on game designs, and I can't really imagine it working out. For example, NanoBlobs units use totally different scales for Workertime than other mods do. A Sheep in NanoBlobs could rez an entire field of dead Peewees from AA in seconds... a Lord would do it even faster.

Moreover... even if "little" things like economic models (which are kind've the core of RTS gameplay) were left to one side... you'd have severe issues with the use various mods have made with things like the Armor table. NanoBlobs has very specific Armor classes for every unit that fits within a given group.

Oh, and then you have things like OnlyTargetCategory, which makes heavy use of things like TEDCLASS definitions and Category. Um, I cut out as much of that as possible in NanoBlobs, just leaving the bare minimum. There isn't any Category = KBOT NOTAIR NOTSHIP NOT... you get the picture.
Instead, we have very streamlined stuff... Category = LAND, for example, for the vast majority of units.

I guess I could've just said, "no, this is a dumb idea"... but it's not a dumb idea... merely impractical. Each mod is a very, very complex structure which would be impractical to integrate with other mods. Even mods which adhere to very OTA-standard gameplay (mexxes, tech levels, factories with distinct exits, balance based on resource scarcity) are far enough from one another due to specific design decisions that, at best, you'd find out just how far each game designer's visions really are from one another.

This only really makes sense if you assume that all mods have TA-derived gameplay. While this may be true for Xect V Mynn, AA, XTA, and TLL, others - like Gundam, NanoBlobs, and EE - are so far off that it goes beyond impractical.

So even a 1 vs 1 Modbridge is impossible?
I just think this would be a real sollution for the "unpopular" Mods, who otherwise vannish or would have to use excessive Marketing to get a Server filled. Just imagine Gundam, AA and FF crashing.... the REsult would be - One FAT SHIp crashing into a Krogoths Face, while some Transportplanes with Gundams circle around them....

:-) 8) Sorry if this Dreamz provokes the Dev...

Um... the best way for those who actually care about the smaller mods to promote them... is to play them online, and share your experiences with others and with the developers. Really, that's all it takes... play it with other people, so that they can find out what they've been missing ;)

Argh, as you well know, the problem is that the vast majority of people are unwilling to play something other than their precious AA.

If I could conscript some peons into playing NanoBlobs with me I would; but as I've said before, when I put a NB game up it gets zero interest whatsoever, so I give up and go play AA myself. (or play against NTai or something, but I don't like playing against AIs too much)

Yeah, that is the single biggest problem with Spring right now (er, from a modder's standpoint, anyhow)... it's very hard to get people away from the dominant game design. I've already talked about how Spring needs better forms of advertisement to appeal to players, built into the Lobby, so that mods can get an audience, instead of merely through word-of-mouth, but it's a big problem, and it's not likely to go away until people start getting bored of AA and are willing to explore alternatives.

I just don't think that this is a real alternative. I mean... er... the units in my mod would eat an AA player alive in about a minute... it'd be kind've a joke to put the Nanos in as a "third race", and watch them pwnOMFG the poor AA players on SpeedMetal ;)

<_< >_>

Gnome was bored, so he plugged 1944's P-51 mustang (D..I think), into SWTA and pit them against TIE fighters.

The results? The P-51s owned. Hugely. Taking on TIE fleets twice or more their number. Then Gnome nerfed the planes to SWTA levels and put them against TIE interceptors, so they lost :(

Oh, and he cut their firepower in half even before he began >_>

The moral of the story? .50 cal M2 machineguns >>>>> TIE hulls.

Or that inter-mod balance is too vastly different :P

The nerfed P-51s still owned TIEs, btw! They were able to take down 20 TIE fighters with no losses (or maybe it was one--I forget), and they were able to take down 16 TIE interceptors before being killed off :P Their rate of fire is simply more suited to dogfighting, but that's also why the Interceptors faired better (they have twice the rate of fire).

Hey

Post by Noruas »

I have already done a cheesy version of AA vs XTA, if anyone wants it, private message and ill start sending it out by next monday. (:
WARNING: AA vs. XTA is not correctly balanced and can cause radiation in the head to try to think of startigies to fight each other. AA games are too popular, too popular and its hurting the community because of it, there should be limit to how many AA games can be hosted so Smaller mods get played more. (and a limit to maps for speedmetal XD)

Could we have Mini(Reduced DEMO)versions of the Mods - that are automatically installed with the Engine
- it would be much easier to convince Peoplz if they didn`t have to dl, just to invest 10 Mins for a Game.

Norua can you upload this Files and post the link ?

And can those Mods who are Popular, integrate Advertising Pictures of other Mods into there Loading Screens ? It s just a Question of Fairness... People can not now what it is good, if they never tried out everything....
