I think it would be awesome If we could specify different sorts trails for weapons.. not just missile weapons but any sort of weapons.. and anything from smoke.. to just say color..

These trails should be seperated from a specific type of weapon function as currently smoke trails can only be used by missile weapons.. Id like them to be use able by all weapon types excluding say lasers perhaps..

The other sort of trail might be a color specified trail that is functions similiar to what youd get in say Homeworld 2 with the fighter trails or missile trails in that game that were just lines of colored light following a object

I've just finished a patch allowing modders to specify the colour of their missile trails

AF, can you define a gradient? so that it can go from yellow to red to gray for example?

also, at the origon can you give it a glow like on the lasers?

Ahhh good 'old Homeworld 2... released years ago and still one of the best looking games around; period.

Tottaly off topic; I liked homeworld one more. The plot line was just more engaging to me


On topic: AF's patch sounds like a great start. Imagine...cotten candy missles!

Freespace allows defining a texture for weapon trails and lasers, I think Spring should aspire to do the same. Other parameters in FS were for lasers: length, head width and tail width (to cause cone-shaped lasers) and for trails: start width, end width, start alpha, end alpha and time it remains active. You could e.g. paint a sinus pattern on your trail and use it for a railgun.

Missile trails in spring are either 2 things atm, particles or lines..

tobi ahs rejected my missile trail patch. Perhaps someone could bug yeha to implement it?

Wow, interesting logic there AF.


Hasn't Tobi already said that it was implemented in a less-than-efficient manner mate? It's a good idea, just need to change the segment in which it is called and stored, right?

The code wasnt upto scratch, I'd have to rework the patch but right now I dont want todo that as I have more pressing concerns such as finishing and rolling out NTai and working on AFLobby+cookiebot.

The more I think about this, the more I want colored smoke/lines and stuff for trails...
It would be awesome to have the missile have a trail like on Ground Control 1....

We need fewer features and more bugfixes.

The game should be stabilized before adding any more little features.
