Really steep slopes and airplanes.

Post by Zagupi »

I've made this map and it's nearing completion. It works otherwise well, in terms of unit movement and such, but airplanes have great difficulty in traversing some areas of the map.

I like big height differences and that's why I made this map like it is now.
You don't see that kind of maps very often imo. (Maybe the airplane issue is just the reason?)

I have some pictures of the map, and of the problem too.
Here's the map. Its 16x16 in size. Maxheight=1100, minheight=0.

And here's a squadron of bombers bouncing off the wall :)

I set them to bomb the upper edge.
I've also found that lv1 gunships don't bounce off, they just fly through the terrain until they've reached their supposed normal altitude :/

It's a shame really, that the airplanes behave that way in such situations :/
I'm not sure if I should release this map as it is, with the airplane problems, or maybe do a drastically scaled downwards version (which would ruin all the fun of the high ground thing :(
What do you think?

Keep it, no airplanes, too bad so sad :P

I think it looks good, like a king of the hill map lol

Airplanes should have some sort of distance/height radar, it should tell them if they are gunna crash into something, would be useful....

Old bug, this is the reason there are very few maps with high altitudes.

Won't be fixed in the foreseeable future because the problem is tied into the poorly built path finding system which needs a large scale rewrite that no one quite has the time for.

Spring has always had this problem. I remember when Azure Rampart was played a lot it was brought up several times. (On that map it used to be so bad planes would fly through a wall and up through the ground into your base  )

EDIT: Map looks really nice BTW. Kind of like a king of the hill style map

Maybe try to make the mountain like this: (side view)

Code: Select all

xxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
This way vehicles can't get on top but planes might fly better, maybe its worth a try.

That's some good advice, thank you.

Btw, anybody know how to make the map's F4-view a little less black? I would prefer to see a little something else too than just the metal spots. It would be clearer and easier to see things that way.

God I hate that...half the time planes will bomb the walls, then crash into them :| . Thus succesfully killing themselves.

A possible solution (for the Spring devs, not you) would be to implement a separate height map for aircraft. It could be very low res and represent the maxima of the various regions. That way planes would pull up before they reach the mountain.

see the thing is that due to some erroneous thing in the code, planes must fly at a certain height (especially bombers) or they won't work correctly. <-- thyat is the root of the problem

Yeah, this was an issue in that "Tower of Babel" map that I thought up and zwzsg tried to do a very long time ago.

I think foothills are the only way to go in this circumstance, which is a shame because it ruins the contrast.

Gorgeous map otherwise though.
