Lobby Suggestion

Post by killcrazy »

here's a real quick and dirty suggestion for the lobby.

Give us a text box, maybe right atop the map list, where we can enter a full url pointing to a map.

This way, it avoids shenanigans with people who are too stupid to be able to download a link from a shifting list of mirrors and successfully put it into their maps folder.

this should be added in the map SMD file instead

in the meanwhile, you can set a welcome message to tell them where to get the map

If you're in a battle and you don't have the map, clicking on the minimap will open "online maps" window and point you to the map in question. All that remains to do is clicking on "download" button and the map gets downloaded and copied into your maps folder automatically.

Betalord, can you add a button saying map downloader near the minimap? If a player doesnt have the map they dont realize there's a map downloader till another player tells them, which is a very bad GUI design flaw.

I will, I am redesigning the map list currently (I agree it's badly designed), I'll put all those buttons in one place.

Betalord: What I'm saying is, many times the map server is down, et cetera. It would be great if the host had the option of pasting a link for the map into a textbox so that the people who didn't have it would automatically download it in instances where the map mirrors are broken, et cetera.

Of course, you may have other means of fixing this issue, including more bulletproof hosting, etc.

I'd paste a 20 minute exchange with two noobs, trying to explain to them how to download greenhaven.v2 (not v3) and install it. It was funny at the time, but now I guess it would be just boring :/

It is unlikely that the map download system will be going down very soon thanks to several generous people. A Spring hosted file system is being created as well, which will eventually replace the current system.
