FreeSpace (and FS2) use a special format called POFs. However, POFs can be converted to a normal format using a program called POF Constructor Suite. Ah, it turns out I can rip the models from the game FreeSpace 2. (It's been released as freeware, so I can do this legally.) Sorry for posting this when I didn't need to.
